Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Notre Dame falls in tough first round matchup with Concord

WHEELING, W.Va – As the ninth seed in Mountain East Conference Tournament, Notre Dame College battled throughout their matchup with the eighth seed Concord University, on Wednesday. NDC shot 52-percent in the first half, but Concord came away with the 73-68 victory after they made 15 of their 30 shots in the second half, along with 14 free throws.

Following a tough start for the Falcons with a couple turnovers, Notre Dame quickly put that in the rearview mirror and even took a 4-3 lead, just two minutes into the contest.

With just under 16 minutes to go in the first half, the two teams traded three-point baskets and Concord led 12-10.

Drew Scarberry drove to the basket for a layup, tying the game at 12 and starting an 11-2 run. After Scarberry dunked the ball four minutes later, Notre Dame was in front by a score of 21-14.

With 5:20 on the clock, Trey Brisco made two free throws for Concord to cut the NDC lead to three points, 25-22, but that would be as close as they would get. The Falcons even extended their lead to 10 points with just 1:17 left before halftime, when Levi Frankland sank two free throws.

At the half, Notre Dame led, 33-24, and were shooting 52-percent (11-for-21) from the field. Bruce Hodges III and Scarberry each had nine points at the half. Frankland totaled seven points. For Concord, David Mulumba and Ethan Heller led the team with five points. CU, as a team, shot 27-percent from the field and 15-percent from long range.

"If you hold a team to 24 [points] in a half, you're doing something right," said Head Coach Mark Richmond. "I thought we played really hard… I told the guys at halftime, I thought we did a good job of taking [Concord] out of some of their stuff."

Notre Dame hit their largest lead of the game early in the second half, going up by 11 points, on two separate occasions. The Mountain Lions cut the lead all the way to two points several times, but the Falcons did a solid job of responding each time.

Between the 6:33-mark and the 4:48-mark, an 8-2 run put Concord in the lead, 58-57. Brisco had seven of the points during that run. He would finish the game with 27 points, with 23 of them coming in the second half.

Deanthony Owens responded with a jumper to put the Falcons ahead by a point. But, the Mountain Lions scored the next eight points and pulled away with a seven point lead with 1:36 on the clock.

Concord scored 49 second half points on 50-percent shooting from the field and 50-percent shooting from three.

"It was a tale of two halves," Richmond said. "I thought we guarded really well in the first half. In the second half, we just got off balance a little bit and they made some plays. Obviously, Trey Brisco played really well in the second half. He got to the free throw line and he was hard to handle in that second half. Disappointing, but I'm proud of the way these guys fought this year. We never gave in and I'm excited about the future."

Jordan Burton finished with 15 points on 63-percent shooting, to lead Notre Dame. Owens had 14 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, while Frankland finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Scarberry finishes his career with 14 points and five boards. He leaves NDC as the program's Division II era leader in three pointers made (313) and he totaled 1,430 points in his career, eighth all-time at NDC.

"We've had some great years and have had some really bad years," Scarberry said. "I was on a team that won six games and I was on a team that won a conference championship. I can't really put it into words. I wouldn't have changed anything I've done. I'm leaving here happy with my career and happy with what I've done and what this school has done. Everyone who I've played with, we're still family. I'm very pleased with how things have gone at Notre Dame."
