Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

NDC's strong second half not enough against Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Notre Dame College put together an incredible offensive second half, shooting 68-percent from the field, but their slow start was too much to overcome against Glenville State College, as the Pioneers won 83-75, on Saturday.

Looking to win four games in row for the first time since March 2-10 of last season, Notre Dame wanted to establish the long range shot early. However, their first three shots, all three pointers, were off the mark.

After missing their first two shots, Glenville State did not miss. The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-0 advantage with 17:42 on the clock, after hitting two free throws, two three pointers and a layup.

By the 9:41 mark in the first half, Notre Dame had connected on just five field goals. Glenville State pushed their lead to 21 points, 31-10, after Steven Verplancken hit a three pointer with 9:19 to go.

But then, the Falcons started hitting shots and began to turn the momentum. Sophomore Levi Frankland responded with a three pointer and a mid-range jumper. Senior Daniel Lott hit a layup and then senior Deanthony Owens was fouled after making a layup. He hit the free throw, which completed the Falcons' 10-0 run. Notre Dame trailed by just 11 points, 31-20, with 6:24 remaining before halftime.

NDC went into the locker room trailing, 42-28. Owens had 10 points on 57-percent shooting, but NDC shot just 43-percent, as a team. Glenville State was shooting 48-percent and out-rebounded Notre Dame by 16.

To start the second half, senior Drew Scarberry hit a layup off a pass from freshman Jordan Burton. That would foreshadow what was to come. The Falcons shot 68-percent in the second half and 86-percent from three-point land, missing just one three pointer.

Through the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second half, Notre Dame shot the ball at a 73-percent clip, which closed the gap to seven points, 53-46.

Glenville State led by 12 points, with 5:14 remaining, when Tyvon Taylor made a layup. But the Falcons, went right down the court and Frankland found Owens, who leaped and dunked the ball. That was the beginning of an 11-2 run, during which Owens scored nine of the points. With 2:30 on the clock, the Falcons trailed by just three points, 75-72.

But, the Pioneers were able to close out the game in the final two minutes and squeaked past NDC.

Notre Dame scored 47 points in the second half, which primarily came from three players. Owens (15), Frankland (15) and Scarberry (12), combined for 42 points in the second stanza. Scarberry went 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from three in the second half, after going scoreless in the first half. Owens finished with 25 points, on a season-high 11 made field goals and Frankland added 22 points. The Falcons also out-rebounded Glenville State by four in the second half.

Verplancken had 14 second half points for GSC and finished with 23 points and three steals. Phil Bledsoe shot 80-percent and had 22 points and 12 rebounds. He also made four three pointers. Five players scored in double-digits as Glenville State shot 51-percent.

Notre Dame will travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. to take on West Virginia Wesleyan College, on February 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
