Men's Basketball By Jacob Bunner

Notre Dame looks to continue their winning ways this week

This Week: Notre Dame College men's basketball stays home to play Concord University on January 29, at 7:30 p.m. Then, the Falcons travel to Glenville State College to battle the Pioneers on February 1, at 4 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame holds an overall record of 6-12 with an MEC record of 4-8. Concord is currently 5-12 and they are 3-9 in MEC play. Glenville State has record of 11-7 (8-4 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond is in his first season as head coach at NDC. Todd May enters his fourth season as head coach of CU. He holds a record of 53-52 and has gone 37-41 in the MEC. Justin Caldwell is now in his second season at the helm of Glenville State, with a record of 22-24, overall, and 14-20 in the MEC.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NABC poll.

Series History: Notre Dame holds a record of 7-7 against Concord and 8-5 against Glenville State, since the MEC began in the 2013-14 season. In early December, the Falcons hosted Glenville State, with GSC getting the 87-79 win. A few days later, Notre Dame visited Concord and fell in a close matchup, 79-76.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame comes into the week after winning back-to-back games for the first time this season. Last week, the Falcons defeated Wheeling University, 72-62, and Urbana University, 78-63. They have also put together an impressive stretch at home, going 4-1 in their previous five home games. The Falcons had balanced offense last week, shooting 49-percent as a team and getting at least three players to score in double-digits over the two games. The offense has been clicking, as NDC has shot over 50-percent in four of their last five games. Their season field goal percentage has risen to 47-percent because of that stretch. Another bright spot has been rebounding, as the Falcons have out-rebounded their opponents in seven of their last ten games. Levi Frankland is first in the conference in minutes per game (36:23) and total minutes (655). He leads the Falcons in points per game (17.5) and three-point percentage (.427). Jordan Burton leads the team with 57 assists and 18 steals. Drew Scarberry is currently fourth among active Division II leaders in career three pointers made, with 291.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has just five wins this season, with a lot of their struggles coming on the road. The Mountain Lions have not won a road game since November 12. They have also gotten off to slow starts many times this season, as they are being outscored by an average of six points in the first half of games. Four players average double-digit scoring for Concord, with Malik Johnson leading the way with 14.5 per contest. He shoots the ball at 47-percent. On defense, they have accumulated an impressive amount of steals, averaging 6.6 per game. Malik Johnson (22) and Trey Brisco (21) already have over 20 steals. On November 23, CU got a big win against Charleston, who is currently second in the MEC standings. That night, Concord shot 57-percent in the first half and finished the game with five players scoring in double-digits.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has already matched their overall win total from last season and surpassed their conference win total from 2018-19. The Pioneers went 8-2 in their first 10 games and then dropped five straight. But, GSC bounced back and has won three consecutive games coming into this week. Glenville State sits in fifth place in the MEC standings and they have some very impressive conference wins already. The Pioneers have beaten Fairmont State (currently tied for third in the MEC) and have won both games of their season series with West Virginia State (currently tied for third). Glenville State's offense has been on a different level this season, as they rank fourth in the country by scoring 97.4 points per game. They lead Division II by making 13.3 three pointers per game and are sixth with 240 total three pointers made. A big part of the scoring is due to the team keeping possessions alive by snagging 14.1 offensive rebounds per game. On the other side, they have one of the worst ranked defenses in DII, and the conference, by allowing 90 points per game and a field goal percentage of 49-percent. The Pioneers are led by Phil Bledsoe, who leads the conference in double-doubles (10), points per game (22.6), total field goals (140) and total points (407) and is second in rebounds per game (9.7). Ty Robinson leads the team with a field goal percentage of 76-percent and has blocked 36 shots.
