Vorhees signs with German team

Bremerhaven, Germany – Will Vorhees, the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year, can now call himself a professional basketball player. On Sunday, the former Notre Dame College men's basketball standout announced that he has signed with a team in Germany.

The Eisbären Bremerhaven, or Bremerhaven Polar Bears, look to turn their luck around with the help of Vorhees. Back in 2005, the Polar Bears were champions in the North Division of 2. Basketball Bundesliga, the second tier league. Because they were one of the top two teams, they moved up to Basketball Bundesliga, the top league.

"Depending on how you do, you can move up [or down,]" Vorhees said.

However, after finishing near the bottom in the standings for the 2018-19 campaign, Bremerhaven was relegated to 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProA. Vorhees comes over following a campaign where he broke several NDC, Mountain East Conference and NCAA records and helped take the Falcons to their first MEC Tournament Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Throughout last season, Vorhees scored 30, or more, points in 14 games and scored over 40 points in four games. He recorded 23 double-doubles (points and rebounds), which ranks second in MEC history for a single-season. In the MEC Tournament, he averaged 23 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and shot 56-percent over the three games, defeating West Virginia State, Fairmont State and No. 5 West Liberty. He followed that by scoring 44 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the NCAA Tournament game, against No.13 Virginia State.

The native of Lima, Ohio ended his career at Notre Dame with the most career points (2,761), most career field goals made (1,067), most career offensive rebounds (413), highest career scoring average (23) and most minutes played for a career (4,279). He ended his senior season 16th on the NCAA Division II All-Time scoring list and scored the most career points of any DII player in 27 years. He was named an All-American by D2CCA, Basketball Times and Division II Bulletin.

Vorhees will fly to Germany on Thursday and prepare for the season which runs from September until May. And if the team finishes as one of the top two teams, they will be promoted to the top league.

"It is exciting and really cool to call myself a pro," Vorhees mentioned. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I'm also happy to see all the hard work that I have put in, paying off."
