Softball stays in Ohio this week with four road games and four home games

This Week: Notre Dame College will play Lake Erie College (April 9 at 3 and 5 p.m.) and Urbana University (April 10 at 3 and 5 p.m.) in two road double-headers. The Falcons come home this weekend to battle the University of Charleston on April 13, at 1 and 3 p.m. and West Virginia State University on April 16, at 1 and 3 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame is 14-20 this season and 4-10 in the MEC while Lake Erie enters as a non-conference foe with an overall record of 9-15. Urbana holds a record of 5-29 (1-11 MEC). Charleston is 19-16 and 10-8 in the Mountain East Conference while West Virginia State is now 20-9 with a conference record of 12-5 MEC.

Rankings: None of the teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 6-2 against Lake Erie since they first played in 2013, beating the Storm 8-0 in Florida. NDC holds a record of 12-11-1 against Urbana since 2013 after sweeping the Blue Knights, last week. Against Charleston, NDC is 3-8 and against West Virginia State, they are 4-7. Both of those series began in 2014.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame was able to sweep Urbana, last week, but were unable to grab a split in either of their two conference double-headers over the weekend. Currently, the Falcons are in fourth place in the MEC North Division and they are ahead of Wheeling Jesuit by one game. The top four in both divisions (North, South) make it to the conference tournament in May. Last week, seniors Halli Swiger and Shelby Stephens were hot at the plate. Swiger had a batting average of .370 with two doubles, four runs scored and seven runs batted in. Stephens went 9-for-26 (.346) at the plate and scored five runs with four RBI to go along with five extra base hits (three doubles, two home runs). Stephens also only struck out once. Rhianna Weall stepped up in several opportunities last week, with six hits and five RBI. McKenzie Zigmont leads the team with a 3.12 ERA. She also has a save and 69 strike outs on the season. Taylor Olson leads the team with seven wins and 13 complete games.

Noting the Storm: Lake Erie was 2-8 in their final 10 games in March, but they have turned that around with a decent start to April. LEC has gone 3-3 this month, including a sweep of Davis & Elkins College. Lake Erie is hitting much better in Great Midwest Athletic Conference games, than in non-conference games with a batting average of .277 as opposed to .252 and a slugging percentage of .403 as opposed to .363. Kaitlyn Peacock leads the team with a batting average of .382, 15 RBI and is tied for the team lead with 26 hits. Rachel Ward leads the team with three homers. Pitcher Allyson Deemer leads the team in starts (10) and complete games (7), but Parker Viele has five wins and 38 strikeouts.

Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana is 2-6 in the month of April and they only have two conference wins on the season. In the past two campaigns, the Blue Knights have won at least eight conference games. Britney Bonno leads the team with .337 and 44 total bases. In fact, the Blue Knights have four players who are hitting over .300 and a team batting average of .271. Three players have seven, or more, doubles with Kayleigh Pate leading the way with eight. However, their team earned run average is 8.62 and opposing hitters are hitting .356 off the pitching staff.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston has won three straight games and sits in third place in the MEC South Division. Haleigh Christopher won MEC Player of the Week after going 9-for-15 at the plate last week. She hit three home runs and had eight RBI. Christopher is hitting .359 on the season and a slugging percentage of .707 with five doubles, nine homers and 31 RBI. Destinee Miles has a batting average of .389 with eight stolen bases. The Golden Eagles pitching staff is led by Carly Turner who has a 2.83 ERA with 11 wins in 16 starts. She has also thrown nine complete games while striking out 99 hitters. UC's team ERA is 4.06 but on the offensive side, their batting average is .290.

Noting the Yellow Jackets: West Virginia State is currently first in the MEC South Division and the third team in the conference to reach 20 total wins. The Yellow Jackets have more wins on the road (7) than they do at home (6). Last week they split with Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan, but swept Glenville State. The Yellow Jackets have swept four conference double-headers this season. The offense has a batting average of .325 with Kasey Murphy leading the way, hitting .415 and Brittany Allison is close behind with an average of .412. Allison has seven doubles, two triples and seven home runs to go along with 28 RBI. Their pitching staff holds an ERA of 2.44. Emilee Walker is 4-1 with an ERA of 2.01 over 11 appearances.
