Softball hosts Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty this weekend

This Week: Notre Dame College played West Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday, as a makeup double-header from earlier in the season. The Falcons will play Wheeling Jesuit University on April 26, at 3 and 5 p.m. and West Liberty University on April 27, at 12 and 2 p.m.

Senior Day: NDC will celebrate Senior Day prior to their games against West Liberty on Saturday.

Records: Notre Dame is 19-29 this season and 7-19 in the MEC. Wheeling Jesuit is 8-36 and 5-21 in the MEC. West Liberty is 29-16, overall, with a 21-7 MEC record.

Coaches Corner: Kelsey Stopp is in her first season as head coach. Sara Pelegreen is in her third season as head coach of Wheeling Jesuit with a record of 58-85 (36-42 MEC). Herb Minch won nearly 400 games in his first stint as head coach of the Hilltoppers, which last from 1995 until 2011. He is currently in his third campaign in his second stint as head coach.

Rankings: None of the teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 15-7 versus West Liberty since the 2014 season. All-time against Wheeling Jesuit, the Falcons are 8-17 since 2013. To start conference play this season, NDC split a double-header with Wheeling Jesuit and lost both to West Liberty.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame would be in the Mountain East Conference Tournament as the fourth seed in the North Division, if it started today. The Falcons dropped their most recent double-header with West Virginia Wesleyan on April 24. Shelby Stephens currently ranks 13th in the Mountain East Conference in batting average (.369) and is tied for fourth with 12 doubles. She leads the team in batting average, 24 runs, 55 hits, five home runs, 25 RBI and 82 total bases. Mikaela Fording is tied with Stephens with 17 extra base hits (11 doubles, three home runs, three triples). Taylor Olson leads the team with an earned run average of 3.38, 27 appearances, 18 complete games, four shutouts and 107 strikeouts. As a team, the Falcons are sixth in the conference with a fielding percentage of .950. Their team batting average of .274 is good for seventh.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit is coming off of an impressive series with Shepherd, taking one of the two games, by a score of 5-2. However, they have gone 2-8 in the previous 10 games and sit in fifth place in the North Division, one spot out of the MEC Tournament. Courtney Rodgers is third in the MEC with 36 RBI and fourth with 10 home runs, while her teammate, Alaina York is tied for first in triples with five. Molly Welsh leads the team with a batting average of .348 and 47 hits and she is tied for the team lead with nine doubles. The team's ERA is 6.40 with Erin Unterbrink leading the way with a 6.10 ERA, two shutouts and 49 strikeouts.

Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty has gone 8-2 in their last 10 games and are now tied for first place in the North Division with Shepherd. WLU is currently fourth in the MEC in team batting average, at .287 and fifth in team ERA, at 3.19. The Hilltoppers also field the ball well and have recorded just 51 errors, fourth fewest in the MEC. Makenzie Amend ranks fourth in the MEC with 119 strikeouts and is eighth with an ERA of 2.28. Allie Cook has the sixth highest batting average in conference (.392) and is second with 14 doubles. Kat Donzella ranks near the top of the MEC in several categories. She is fifth with 35 runs scored, second with 38 RBI, second with 14 home runs, tied for first with 99 total bases.
