Softball travels to play two conference opponents

Upcoming Games: Notre Dame College started the week by playing West Virginia State on April 16, which were games moved from last weekend due to weather. The rest of the week, NDC is back on the road to play the University of Virginia's College at Wise on April 18 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and then Concord University on April 22 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame is 18-24 this season and 6-14 in the MEC. UVa-Wise holds a record of 19-18 (13-9 MEC) while Concord is 26-17 and 14-10 in the conference.

Coaches Corner: Kelsey Stopp is in her first season as head coach. Karen Bitter and Nick Bitter are co-head coaches of the UVA-Wise softball program. Karen is in her eighth season leading the Cavaliers and Nick is in his fifth season. Alisa Tasler, now in her eighth season with the Concord program, has a 210-197 overall record, while her teams are 95-77 in MEC play.

Rankings: None of the teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 6-7 all-time against Concord since 2014. Also since 2014, NDC has a record of 4-7 versus UVa-Wise. In the 2018 regular season, Notre Dame split a double-header with Concord and swept the Cavs. However, UVa-Wise beat the Falcons in the 2018 MEC Tournament.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame went 4-2 last weekend, sweeping Lake Erie College and Urbana University. Shelby Stephens had 12 hits last week and put together a batting average of .545. She had multi-hit games in five of the six games in the past week, recording four runs, six RBI, three doubles and two home runs. She also had a career-high four hits in a game against Lake Erie College. Stephens leads the team with a batting average of .375, 48 hits, five home runs, 21 RBI, 72 total bases and a slugging percentage of .563. Rhianna Weall hit .391 with five RBI and two doubles, last week. Weall is hitting .349 on the year and leads the team with a .429 on base percentage. This past Tuesday, the Falcons made up a double-header with West Virginia State, falling twice. Taylor Olson moved up to third in Notre Dame history with 275 career strikeouts. She has 86 strike outs this season with nine wins, an ERA of 3.27 and 16 complete games.

Noting the Cavaliers: Over the past two weeks, UVa-Wise has gone 5-3. Because of a few schedule changes, the Cavaliers have played a double-header every day since Monday. UVa-Wise split a series in Shepherd, giving them one of their four conference losses. However, in their three losses over the past week, UVa-Wise was outscored 20-5. On Wednesday, they swept Urbana, outscoring the Blue Knights 21-4. Shannon Bennett has a batting average of .346 and her teammate Alexis Miles has hit for power with nine doubles and eight home runs. Miles has 26 RBI and 67 total bases. Kailyn Spencer has a record of 7-6, but she leads the team with an ERA of 3.19 and has recorded a save. The team's ERA is at 4.23, as three of their four pitchers have an ERA over four.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has been playing well this past week. After splitting a series with UVa-Wise, Concord then swept Fairmont State and split a series with Shepherd, giving the North Division leading Rams their fourth conference loss of the season. The series with NDC will wrap up a homestand of four double-headers, or eight straight home games, in Athens, W.Va. CU has a 13-5 record at home. Jenna Witt is leading the team with a batting average with .399. She has 55 hits, eight home runs, 89 total bases and a .645 slugging percentage, which all lead the team. Cartney Schoolcraft has 11 wins and a 2.43 ERA, as a pitcher over 21 appearances. She has recorded 116 of her team's 196 strikeouts.
