This Week:Â Notre Dame College softball will have a full week of games. They will travel to play Gannon University on March 26, at 3 and 5 p.m. and Walsh University on March 28, at 3 and 5 p.m. This weekend, they come home to play West Virginia Wesleyan College on March 30, at 1 and 3 p.m. and Glenville State College on March 31, at 1 and 3 p.m.
Records:Â Notre Dame is currently 10-12 this season with an MEC record of 2-6. Gannon holds a record 9-6 this season and Walsh is 6-20. WVWC holds a record of 9-13 (2-6 MEC) and Glenville State is 6-16 (1-7 MEC).
Coaches Corner:Â
Kelsey Stopp is in her first season as head coach with NDC. Michelle Wiley is also in her first season as the head coach of the Gannon program. Anna Ball enters her second season as head coach of Walsh, holding a record of 26-42. Steve Warner is in his 27th year at West Virginia Wesleyan, with a record of 1,052-379-1. Kristen Tunno is now in her fifth season as head coach of GSC. Last season, Glenville State went 20-32 (8-24 MEC).
Rankings:Â None of the teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
Series History:Â The Falcons are 1-3 against Gannon since they first played in 2014 and have a 4-6 record against Walsh since 2013. NDC is 5-8 against West Virginia Wesleyan since 2014 and 7-3 against Glenville State since 2014.
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame College went 5-3 in eight home games, sweeping Ursuline and Mercyhurst and then splitting a double-header with Fairmont State before losing to Shepherd.
McKenzie Zigmont played very well for the Falcons in the batter's box and pitcher's circle. She struck out 23 hitters in 28 innings, as well as posting three complete game victories. At the plate, she had nine RBI for the week. In a game against Ursuline, on March 19, she went off, striking out 10 hitters and grabbing six RBIs, hitting a three-run double and three-run home run.
Shelby Stephens also had a great week, hitting 9-for-23 (.391) with five runs scored, and she hit safely in six of the seven games she played.
Mikaela Fording hit .300 (6-for-20) with a home run and four RBI. Stephens leads the team in batting average (.349) and hits (22) and she also has four extra base hits and 10 RBI. Of
Mikaela Fording's 15 hits, 11 of them have been extra bases (eight doubles, a triple and two home runs) and she currently is hitting .278. Both Zigmont and
Taylor Olson have a 5-6 record, while Olson has 2.90 ERA and Zigmont's ERA is at three. Olson leads the team with 10 complete games, but Zigmont has 49 strikeouts.
Noting the Golden Knights: Gannon has only played 15 games so far, this season, and have not played a game since Friday, March 15. After going 5-6 on their spring trip to Clermont, Florida, GU swept double-headers with Point Park University and Clarion University. Their games with NDC will be their first home games of the year. Lisa Szajn leads the team with a .442 batting average and has already recorded five doubles, a triple and four home runs. The Golden Knights have seven players hitting over .300, including three that hit over .400. Kennedy DeMatteis (2.60) and Madi Beining (2.96) both have ERAs under three and four wins on the season.
Noting the Cavaliers: Walsh has gotten off to a tough start to the season. After starting 1-12, the Cavaliers won four of their next six games, only to drop six of their last seven games. As a team, they are hitting .289 and have six players with an above .300 batting average. Taylor Yoder leads the team with a .397 batting average and 27 hits while Jessie Rock has 10 doubles, four homers and 19 RBI. The big issue has been pitching, as seven players have pitched at least an inning and the team ERA is 7.53 with 23 home runs allowed. Head Coach Anna Ball is a Notre Dame College Hall of Fame member, inducted as a player (2015) and with the 2009 softball team (2016).
Noting the Bobcats: The 2019 campaign has been a rocky one for West Virginia Wesleyan, after winning 43 games last year and celebrating four victories in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Bobcats are currently 2-6 in conference play, and those six losses mark the most the program has had in a season since they fell 10 times in conference play in 2013. The only player who has a batting average above .288, is Kennedy Cowart who hits .388 with 26 hits, but she only has four RBI. Kiley Turner has four homers and 15 RBI. Hannah Hudson has an ERA of 2.69 with five wins and nine complete games with 56 strikeouts. However, the pitching staff has a total ERA of 4.28 and opposing batters are hitting .303 against them. Coming into the season, Head Coach Steve Warner's 1043 wins ranked ninth among NCAA-II coaches.
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has lost their last five games, including getting swept by UVa-Wise and Concord, last weekend. During the losing streak, the Pioneers have been outscored, 32-11. GSC has gone 2-8 in their last 10 games. Karra Smith has been on top of nearly every category at the plate for the Pioneers. She is batting .415 with six homers, 19 RBI, 47 total bases and a slugging percentage of .723. Kelsey Naylor is second on the team with three home runs and 12 RBI. Six pitchers have appeared in, at least, three games and the team ERA is 5.62. Celina Maberto leads the team in ERA (4.89), wins (3), complete games (4) and strike outs (19).
