Lacrosse battles Ursuline and then hops into conference play

This Week: Notre Dame College women's lacrosse opens up the home portion of their schedule against Ursuline College on March 20, at 4 p.m. They travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College on March 22 at 4 p.m. and then on March 24, they battle Shepherd University at noon.

Records: Notre Dame is currently 2-3 on the season and Ursuline is 1-3. West Virginia Wesleyan holds a record of 4-2, while Shepherd is 3-3.

Coaches Corner: Pam Jenkins is now in her third season as the head coach at NDC with an overall record of 7-24. She will be looking to grab her first conference win at Notre Dame. Eileen Ferry is the new head coach at Ursuline College, while Hannah Lively is now in her third season as head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan with a record of 14-21-1 (3-7 MEC). Jenny Miller enters her fourth season at the helm of the Shepherd program. She has a record of 26-31 and is 11-5 in the MEC.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: Notre Dame has an all-time record of 3-2 against Ursuline, including a 19-10 loss last season. The Falcons are 4-4 versus West Virginia Wesleyan and 2-6 against Shepherd.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame looks to get back to their winning ways against non-conference rival Ursuline, who the Falcons have played every year since 2014. Leading the Falcons in goals are a pair of freshman, Danyelle Hardy and Leslie Diaz who both have 13. Hardy also has four assists and 17 points, while Diaz has five free position goals. Katie Wendell has caused eight turnovers and NDC's defense has caused four more turnovers, than their opponents (40-36), this season. In goal, McKenzie Shean has 37 saves and 14 groundballs. Notre Dame has cleared the ball 83-percent of the time in five games.

Noting the Arrows: Ursuline got off to a tough start, going against Mercyhurst, who was ranked 15th in the nation, in the season opener. Their only win of the year came against Ohio Northern University on March 2, when Abigail Neeley scored less than two minutes into overtime, in a close 12-11 contest. In their lone win of the season, the Arrows had 12 caused turnovers and seven assists, both were season-highs. Michaela Riley has nine goals this season and five assists. Julia Zackey has a shots-on-goal percentage of .857 with seven goals scored. Both goalkeepers, Emily Hall and Dominique Jackson have a save percentage of .304, in at least three games played.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan snapped their two game losing streak after beating Ohio Valley University, on March 17. That win was their first at home, while away from Buckhannon, the Bobcats are 3-1. Madison Duvall has 20 goals, which nine more than any of her teammates. Duvall also has won 35 draw controls for her team. Samantha Pappas has an impressive .885 shots-on-goal percentage this season and has recorded 10 goals. Three goalies have played, but Gabrielle Cleaveland holds a save percentage of .533 and a record of 3-2.

Noting the Rams: Shepherd has won three of their last four contests, and back-to-back games. In their most recent games, they took down Chestnut Hill, by a score of 17-11 and then beat Wilmington, 18-8. In their three wins this season, the Rams recorded, at least, seven assists and held opposing teams to under 12 goals. In wins, SU scores an average of 19 goals-per-game as compared to an average of six goals in losses. Lillian Funke leads the team in several categories. She has 21 goals and nine assists. She has a shots-on-goal percentage of .837, five free position goals, 42 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers. In goal, Hailey Bennett has saved 62 shots and has a .521 save percentage.
