Notre Dame falls one goal short against Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Wednesday afternoon, Notre Dame College and the University of Charleston had another classic Mountain East Conference battle. In the contest that featured four lead changes and seven ties, Charleston held on for a 13-12 victory over NDC.

After UC put the first goal into the net, Notre Dame's Joselyn Storm took the next draw control and sophomore Jovie Noack tied the game at one, with 12:52 left in the first quarter.

Over the next five minutes, Charleston scored three goals to pull ahead, 4-1 but about four minutes later, NDC began its comeback as junior Grace Nickoloff scored on a free position shot. Storm did not take her first shot until the 2:50-mark in the first quarter and she scored her first goal at the 47-second mark in the first, with an assist by Nickoloff.

The Falcons continued to have opportunities around the goal, as they took three shots early in the second quarter, prior to their first goal of the stanza. With 9:44 remaining in the second quarter, sophomore Grace Rotter passed to Nickoloff who tied the contest at four.

NDC did not stop there as Storm won the next draw control, and freshman Gwen Bogash took a shot that was saved. The Falcons fought for the ball and retrieved it. Then Nickoloff dumped the ball off to Storm and Notre Dame took its first lead of the game, 5-4, with eight minutes remaining in the second.

The Golden Eagles scored twice before Notre Dame's Bogash tied the game at six before halftime. Despite the score being tied, NDC was leading the draw control battle, 12-2, after the first 30 minutes.

Charleston grabbed an 8-6 lead in the third quarter and then won the following draw control. But, the Golden Eagles turned the ball over and that led to another goal by Noack, with an assist by freshman Kendall Ratermann.

About six minutes later, junior Cameron Briggs caused a turnover and Storm scored again to tie the contest at eight. Notre Dame led as late as the 3:32-mark in the third quarter, when Storm scored for a fourth time.

The game was tied at nine by the end of the third quarter, but UC took an 11-9 lead, early in the fourth.

Notre Dame's goalie, Annika Duncan, made a very important save on a shot on target, with 8:23 remaining. On the other side of the field, junior Lexington Carson scored to make the score 11-10.

Freshman Tatum Hagen won the next draw control and NDC took two shots, but neither resulted in a goal. With under four minutes remaining, Charleston turned the ball over and Briggs scored to pull NDC within one goal, 12-11. The Falcons got the ball back and Bogash scored to tie the game at 12, with 2:23 remaining in the game.

Charleston won the next draw control and scored, less than a minute later. The Golden Eagles had multiple chances to put the game away, but turned the ball over three times in the final 1:13. Notre Dame had one last shot to tie the contest with four seconds left, but an attempt went over the crossbar.

Storm ended the game with four goals, while Nickoloff, Bogash and Noack all scored two. Nickoloff added three assists and Rotter had two assists. Storm also totaled nine draw controls and Hagen added seven. On the defensive side, Storm caused three turnovers, while Briggs and junior Camille Brathwaite both had two.
