ELKINS, W.Va. – Through 55 minutes of action, Notre Dame College found themselves down by just two goals. However, Davis & Elkins College finished the game on a 5-1 run to beat the Falcons, 15-9, on Sunday afternoon.
Notre Dame grabbed the first draw control and took the ball down the field. The Falcons got on the board first, as senior
Taylor Henderson converted on her free position shot.
After D&E scored twice, a turnover gave the ball back to NDC and freshman
Danyelle Hardy took the ball down the field and scored.
Down by three goals, Notre Dame responded with two goals of their own. Henderson grabbed a ground ball, following a turnover, and then freshman
Leslie Diaz scored a free position shot with 14:49 to go. On the defensive end, sophomore
McKenzie Shean recorded a save and the Falcons went the other way. Hardy stopped in an open spot behind the goal and whipped a pass to Henderson, who scored the goal with 12:03 remaining, making the score 5-4.
Diaz scored one more free position goal, while the Falcons were a man-up on the field, with 3:24 to go before halftime.
At halftime, D&E led 7-5. Ryann Sumner led Davis & Elkins with three goals, while Diaz and Henderson each had two goals for the Falcons. Henderson also had four ground balls. NDC was successful on 83-percent of their clear attempts, while the Senators were successful on just 50-percent.
Within the first three minutes of the second half, D&E had scored two goals. Notre Dame's Hardy put the ball in the net with 20:32 remaining and a minute later, she had a chance to score again. A yellow card was given to the Senators, but Hardy's free position hit the post. Henderson picked the ball up but her shot was saved by D&E's Ebela De La Bay Coffie.
Later in the game, when the Falcons were down 10-6, NDC made a late run. At the 7:24-mark, Hardy assisted on another goal by Henderson. One minute later, Henderson had another look at goal but it was blocked. The Falcons kept the ball on the Senators' side of the field and Hardy took advantage as she scored her third goal of the game, making the score 10-8, in favor of D&E.
At that point, Davis & Elkins put five of the final six goals on the scoreboard in the final 4:20 of the contest.
For Notre Dame, Henderson led the way with four goals and seven ground balls. Hardy scored three goals, dished out three assists and caused one turnover. Freshman
Katie Wendell won three draw controls and Shean finished with 11 saves. NDC caused three more turnovers than D&E.
For the Senators, Hanna Bond and Sumner each had four goals and they both had two caused turnovers. Bond picked up six ground balls. Angelina Horan scored three goals, recorded three assists and won seven draw controls. De La Bay Coffie saved 14 shots.
The Falcons will play their home opener against Ursuline College, on March 20. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
