SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College and Ursuline College were in a tight battle for much of the 60 minutes of play, on Wednesday afternoon. NDC tied the game, twice, in the first 20 minutes but Ursuline slowly increased their lead and won, 17-12.
Ursuline took their first lead less than two minutes into the game when Jillian Guiles put the ball in the net. Freshman
Danyelle Hardy quickly tied the game with a goal for the Falcons.
The Arrows went on a 4-1 run over the next 12 minutes to go ahead 5-2, with 15:40 remaining in the first half. That's when the Falcons began their run. Following a shot clock violation, NDC took the ball down the field and freshman
Katie Wendell scored her first goal of the game.
Wendell then got the draw control, but on the offensive end, senior
Taylor Henderson's shot was saved by Ursuline goalkeeper Dominique Jackson. Notre Dame kept pushing toward a goal, and after another UC turnover, sophomore
Selena Carter scored a free position goal, following an Ursuline foul.
Less than a minute later, Henderson grabbed the draw control and Hardy scored another goal, which tied the game at 5, with 11:33 on the clock.
However, the Arrows then scored the next five goals on offense, while their defense allowed the Falcons to take just one shot on the other side of the field.
UC led, 11-7, at the end of the first half. Notre Dame did score two of the final three goals of the half, and carried the momentum into the final 30 minutes.
Hardy caused a turnover, grabbed the ground ball and went down the field to score the first goal of the second stanza. NDC won the draw control and then Hardy scored again on a free position attempt. Hardy brought the Falcons within two goals, 11-9.
Ursuline, again, went on a run which put them up, 15-9. The closest Notre Dame could get in the final 10 minutes was four points (16-12).
Hardy totaled four goals on four shots-on-goal and had two caused turnovers. Wendell and Carter, each, had two goals.
Taylor Henderson won 10 draw controls. The Falcons cleared the ball on 92-percent of their attempts.
For Ursuline, Abigail Neeley scored five goals, while Michaela Riley successfully put the ball in the net on four of her seven shots-on-goal. She also dished out five assists. Jaclyn Gilmore had three goals, four assists and three caused turnovers.
The Falcons will play, next, at West Virginia Wesleyan College, on March 22. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
