This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball takes a road trip to play No. 7 West Liberty University on February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Urbana University on March 2 at 4 p.m., wrapping up the regular season.
Records: The Falcons are 19-7, overall, and 15-5 in the Mountain East Conference. West Liberty comes in with a record of 22-3 (18-2 MEC) while Urbana holds a record of 5-19 (3-17 MEC).
Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig is the head coach of the Falcons and is in his sixth season with an overall record of 89-86 and he is 60-70 in the MEC. Ben Howlett is now in his second season as head coach of West Liberty and has a record of 48-7 (38-4 MEC). Nick Dials, who is also in his second season with Urbana, has a record of 9-43, overall, and 6-36 in the MEC.
Rankings: West Liberty is ranked seventh in the NABC Coaches poll and second in the Atlantic Region. Notre Dame is ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region poll.
Series History: The Falcons are 1-11 against West Liberty since the 2013-14 season, after falling to WLU in early December. NDC is 13-4 against Urbana since 2001-02 and beat them by 28 points on January 26.
Noting the Falcons: Last week, NDC defeated Concord at home, 88-79, to extend their home winning streak to 10 games, the longest for the program in at least a decade. However, the streak came to an end when they fell to UVa-Wise, 92-87, last Saturday.
Will Vorhees averaged 39.5 points and 10 rebounds last week and took home Mountain East Conference Player of the Week and U.S. Basketball Writers of America Division II Player of the Week, for the third consecutive week. He has now scored over 30 points in eight straight games. Vorhees is currently in the top-10, in NCAA Division II, in field goals made (1st, 274), double-doubles (2nd, 18), points-per-game (3rd, 28.5) total points (5th, 712), rebounds-per-game (8th, 11.2) and total rebounds (9th, 280). In the MEC, Vorhees is second with 1.4 blocks-per-game and second with 3.8 offensive rebounds-per-game.
Larenz Thurman ranks 11th in the conference in points, as he scores 17.6 points and he is second in assists with 5.17 per game. He is also second in three point percentage (45.6-percent).
Bruce Hodges III's assist-to-turnover ratio is 12th in Division II at 3.04. NDC, as a team, is third in the MEC in field goal percentage (48.1-percent) and free throw percentage (78.4-percent). The Falcons defense has been strong all season, and at the moment, they hold teams to 79 points-per-game, which is tied for third in the conference. NDC also ranks first in the conference in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 43.7-percent shooting, on average, as well as fourth in three point percentage defense, holding teams to 35-percent. They block 3.3 shots-per-game, ranking third.
Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty has won two games in a row after falling to the University of Charleston by one point. WLU is now 17-2 since the beginning of December. The Hilltoppers shoot the ball extremely well, as they rank first in NCAA-II in three point percentage, at 44-percent. They also lead the nation by scoring nearly 104 points-per-game. They are in the top-10 in the country in three point field goals-per-goal per game (12), assists-per-game (18.9), field goal percentage (51.2), total rebounds (42.8), free throw percentage (79.4), offensive rebounds-per-game (14.4) and three pointers made (303). The Hilltoppers hold teams to 36-percent shooting from long range, which is fifth best in the Mountain East Conference. WLU is third in steals-per-game (7.5). Dalton Bolon is ninth in NCAA Division II with 3.56 three pointers made-per-game and 13th with 89 three pointers made. Bolon is third in the conference in scoring at 22.2 points-per-game. Luke Dyer is second in assists-to-turnover ratio in the D-II at four and fourth in assists-per-game at 4.16. Eric Meininger is one of only 15 Division II players with a triple-double this season. He is sixth in the conference in rebounding at 7.8 per game.
Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana lost two games last week to UVa-Wise and Concord, and allowed an average of 97.5 points-per-game. UU has lost 11 straight, and they are 3-12 since the beginning of January. UU ranks third in the MEC in three point field goal percentage, at 38-percent. They block 2.6 shots-per-game, which is fifth in the conference. Ethan Snapp ranks third in Division II with a 52.2 percent three point percentage. Malik Jacobs averages 15.5 points-per-game, which is 15th best in the Mountain East Conference.Â
