Men's basketball plays final two home games of season this week

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball plays their final two home games of the 2018-19 campaign, battling Concord University on February 21 at 7:30 p.m. and then the University of Virginia's College at Wise on February 23, at 4 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are 18-6, overall, and 14-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord comes into the week with a record of 16-8 and 11-7 in the MEC. Virginia-Wise is currently 7-17 (4-14 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig is the head coach of the Falcons and is in his sixth season with an overall record of 88-85 and he is 59-69 in the MEC. Todd May is in his third season as head coach at Concord and has a record of 44-38 (30-32 MEC). Blake Mellinger is in his sixth season at the helm of the Cavaliers and he has a record of 47-120, overall, and 33-95 in the MEC.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NABC Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 6-6 against Concord and 9-3 against UVa-Wise since 2013-14. The Falcons beat both teams in November.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame College moved into a tie for second place with Fairmont State after defeating Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan. Will Vorhees was named MEC Player of the Week and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week, for the second consecutive week, after averaging 38 points, on 72-percent shooting, and 11 rebounds. Vorhees is now leading the country in total field goals made (245) and he is second in double-doubles (17). Bruce Hodges III became just the third player in NDC program history to record a rebounds and assists double-double (10 reb, 11 ast). Hodges is second in the conference with a 3.27 assists-to-turnover ratio. Over the past week, he averaged eight rebounds and eight assists. Larenz Thurman averaged 19 points and 7.5 assists, last week. He is second in the conference, averaging five assists-per-game, this season. NDC has been very good defensively, ranking third in the MEC, allowing 78.5 points-per-game, while ranking first in field goal percentage defense, at 43-percent, and fourth in three point field goal defense, holding teams to 35-percent. They are also third with 3.3 blocked shots-per-game and Vorhees is second in the MEC with 1.4 blocks-per-contest. The Lima, Ohio native leads the MEC with 11.3 rebounds-per-game. On the offensive end, the Falcons are third in the conference in field goal percentage (48-percent) and free throw percentage (79-percent). Vorhees (27.5 ppg), who ranks second in points-per-game, and Thurman (18.6 ppg), who ranks eighth, combine to make the Falcons one of only two teams in the conference (Concord) who have two players in the top eight in scoring. Thurman is second in three point percentage at 46-percent. Isaiah Sanders is fifth in the MEC, making free throws at an 84-percent clip.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord bounced back from a three game losing streak by winning twice, last week. They defeated Shepherd by one point, after Tommy Bolte hit a layup with 16-second left. And then, in maybe their most impressive victory of the season, CU defeated Fairmont State, 91-80, outscoring the Fighting Falcons by 14 points in the second half. Jair Rodgers knocked down five threes. Last week, Rodgers averaged 24.5 points and Bolte averaged 25. Bolte is leading the conference at 29.3 points-per-game. Concord leads the conference with an 81-percent free throw percentage. The Mountain Lions score 87.3 points-per-game, which is fifth best in the MEC and they are the only team in the Mountain East Conference with two players, in Bolte (29.3) and Rodgers (21.6), who are in the top-five in scoring. Simun Kovac is now fourth in the conference with nine rebounds-per-game and second in offensive boards at 3.67 per game. Bolte is also third in assists (4.79) and second in free throw percentage (91-percent) in the MEC, while Rodgers is third in free throw percentage (90-percent) and first with 99 three pointers made.
 
Noting the Cavaliers: Virginia-Wise is 2-8 in their last 10 games. Last week they lost to Fairmont State and Shepherd. The Cavaliers were out-rebounded by an average of eight boards last week and shot just 40-percent over the two games. On defense, UVa-Wise ranks fourth in the MEC in field goal percentage defense (46-percent) and they are first defending the three point line (33-percent). They make their threes at a 38-percent mark, which is tied for fourth best in the MEC. The Cavaliers block 2.9 shots-per-game (ranked fourth) and dish out 16.4 assists (third). They grab 27.5 defensive rebounds-per-game which is third in the MEC. Briggs Parris has made 93 three pointers this season, which ranks second in the conference and shoots them at 43-percent which ranks fourth. He leads UVa-Wise, scoring 16.5 points-per-game.
