Men's basketball travels to Glenville State and W.Va. Wesleyan, this week

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball clashes with Glenville State College on February 14 at 7:30 p.m. and then they will take on West Virginia Wesleyan on February 16 at 4 p.m. Both games are on the road.

Records: The Falcons are 16-6, overall, and 12-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Glenville State is currently 9-13 and 4-12 in the MEC, while W.Va. Wesleyan is also 9-13 with a 6-10 conference record.

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig is the head coach of the Falcons and is in his sixth season with an overall record of 86-85 and he is 57-69 in the MEC. Justin Caldwell is in his first season at the helm of Glenville State. Jack Meriwether is in his second season as head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan with a record of 16-31 (13-21 MEC).

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NABC Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 7-4 against Glenville State since 2013 and 6-6 against West Virginia Wesleyan since 2012. Notre Dame beat both teams, at home, last month.

Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame defeated Shepherd and Fairmont State. Will Vorhees was named Mountain East Conference Player of the Week and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Player of the Week after averaging 32.5 points and 14.5 rebounds. He also took over the NDC all-time scoring record. Larenz Thurman averaged 15.5 points and six assists over the past week. Vorhees is now second in NCAA Division II with 16 double-doubles. He ranks fourth in total field goals made with 224, fifth in points-per-game with 26.5 and sixth in total points with 582. On the glass, he ranks sixth in total rebounds (246), seventh in rebounds-per-game (11.2) and offensive rebounds-per-game (3.86) as well as 16th in defensive rebounds-per-game (7.32). Larenz Thurman is eighth in the conference with nearly 19 points-per-game and he is second, shooting 47-percent from long range. Thurman averages 4.7 assists-per-game, which is third highest in the conference. As a team, Notre Dame ranks 15th in the nation in free throw percentage, shooting 79-percent at the charity stripe. In the conference, Notre Dame is third in the conference, allowing just 78 points-per-game. The defense has been great all season, ranking first in the MEC in field goal percentage defense (43-percent) and three point percentage defense (35-percent). On average, the Falcons grab four more rebounds than their opponent, which is third best in the league and they are third with 3.5 blocked shots-per-game. The Falcons bring down 12.4 offensive rebounds-per-game (3rd ranked) and 27 defensive rebounds-per-game (5th).

Noting the Pioneers: The Falcons defeated Glenville State on January 10, by 28 points. That was the beginning of a seven game losing streak. However, in their past three contests, GSC has gone 2-1. Last week, they defeated West Virginia State but lost to Charleston. This season, Phil Bledsoe is second in NCAA Division II, hauling in 8.5 defensive rebounds-per-game while he is fifth best in rebounds-per-game (11.3) and total rebounds (249). In the conference, he is seventh, averaging 19.5 points-per-game and is fourth with a three point percentage of 43-percent. Bledsoe also has 13 double-doubles, which puts him sixth in the NCAA-II. Ty Robinson blocks 1.9 shots-per-contest, best in the conference. Glenville State has been impressive offensively and on the boards. They have the fourth highest scoring offense in the nation, with 93 points-per-game. The Pioneers make 11.9 threes-per-game, which ranks fourth and they are eighth with 262 three pointers made on the season. They also rank fourth in the country in defensive rebounds-per-game (29) and 14th in total rebounds-per-game (41.4). The Pioneers are tied with W.Va. State at the top of the conference with 4.27 blocked shots-per-game and they dish out 16.3 assists each night, which is fourth in the conference. They are tied for third with 12.41 offensive rebounds-per-game and they lead the league with 29 defensive rebounds-per-game, on average.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has lost three out of their last four games and they have scored less than 70 points in three out of their previous four. Last week, they lost to Charleston in overtime and fell to West Virginia State. This season, Luka Petrovic is 14th in NCAA Division II in total steals (55) and 17th in steals-per-game (2.5). He is first in the MEC in assists-per-game with 5.9. Dusan Vicentic is leading the team with 15 points-per-game. He is also third in the conference with 1.23 blocked shots-per-game. Clay Todd steals the ball 1.95 times each game, making the Bobcats the only team in the MEC with two players in the top eight in steals-per-game. The Bobcats pass the ball very well, ranking 18th in the Division II in assists-per-game at 17.3 and they are 16th in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.48). They also do not foul very often, averaging 14 per game, which 10th lowest in the country. The Bobcats are 15th with 11.2 three point field goals-per-game. In the MEC, WVWC ranks first, allowing just 73 points-per-game and they take the ball away with 8.1 steals each game, which is second highest in the league.
