Women's basketball faces two road tests

This Week: Notre Dame College is on the road this week with two MEC matchups. First, the Falcons head to Glenville State on Thursday, February 14, for a 5:30 p.m. game. Then, on Saturday, February 16, NDC travels to West Virginia Wesleyan to play at 2 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are currently 12-10 (9-7 MEC) after splitting a pair of MEC games last week. Glenville State is on an 11-game winning streak and holds a 20-2 record this season, including 15-1 in the MEC. West Virginia Wesleyan is 4-15 (4-11 MEC) and is on a six-game skid.

Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her second season as the head coach of the NDC women's basketball program. She holds a record of 35-19, 26-12 MEC. Kim Stephens is in her third season at Glenville State. Stephens is 75-10, 55-5 MEC. Last season, Stephens led her team to an MEC Championship and a first-round victory in the NCAA DII Tournament. Vicky Bullett is also in her third season at WVWC, where she has a 17-52, 15-40 MEC record.

Rankings: Glenville State was ranked #23 in the February 12 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll after being unranked last week. Neither of the other teams competing this week were ranked.

Series History: The Falcons are 2-10 against Glenville State, and have not won against the Pioneers since January 4, 2016. Notre Dame has fared much better against Wesleyan, as NDC leads that series 10-1. Head coach Lauren Macer is 3-0 against WVWC and her teams have come out on top by an average of 12.3 points. Macer is 0-4 against Glenville State, but her defenses have never allowed GSC to score over 100 points. Three times the Falcons held the Pioneers under 90. Over the past two season, Glenville State has averaged 101.0 points per game.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame newcomer Jada Marone has become a standout over the past four games, which are the first four games of her college career. While many Falcons have had good games over that span (Seina Adachi has averaged nearly 15 points per game, Jessie Stout has averaged 8.5 rebounds and Katie Karalic has totaled 14 assists and 10 steals), Marone has averaged 8.8 points in 13.3 minutes since first hitting the court against West Virginia State on January 30. And while the Falcons are 2-2 in those games, Marone has yet to have a negative plus-minus mark. The team was a neutral sum-zero in her first game, but since then, Marone's plus-minus has been +5 against Charleston, +15 against Shepherd and +2 against Fairmont State. Last week, against Shepherd and Fairmont State, she totaled 30 points in 34 minutes off the bench.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has been dominant at home since the arrival of head coach Kim Stephens. In Stephens's three season leading the Pioneers, her team is 33-0 in the Waco Center, GSC's home court. In those 33 games, Glenville State has average 101.7 points. This season, the team's home-game average is the highest it has ever been at 107.3. The Falcons have been tough competition for the Pioneers when seen in comparison to GSC's other games. Notre Dame kept Glenville State to 83 points in the 2016-17 season and held them to 84 last year. NDC's games at Waco Center were decided by 14 and 15 points, over the last two years, respectively. Glenville State's margin of victory has only been within 15 points nine times over the past three seasons. Stephens has averaged a 26.3 margin of victory in her 33-straight home victories.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has struggled to score this year with just 64.5 points per game this season, which is second-fewest in the Mountain East Conference. Much of the Bobcats scoring woes come from their three-point shooting. WVWC has made a conference-low 87 threes this season and have also converted on a conference-low 24.9 percent of their shots from distance. The only other team that has made less than 100 threes in the league is Charleston (88), but the Golden Eagles have only attempted 270 threes (a league low) to make their percentage 32.6. West Virginia Wesleyan's four wins this season come when the team is shooting well and rebounding. The Bobcats are 3-3 when shooting above 40 percent from the field and are 4-4 when rebounding 40 or more missed shots.
