Men's basketball faces two conference opponents this week

This Week: Notre Dame College men's basketball will host Glenville State College on December 4, with a 7:30 tip-off time. The Falcons will head south to Athens, W.Va. to battle Concord University on December 7, at 4 p.m.

Records: Notre Dame is 1-5 (0-2 MEC) while Glenville State comes into the week with an overall record of 4-2 and an MEC record of 1-1. Concord is currently 3-4, and they also have a 1-1 conference record.

Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond enters his first season as the head coach of NDC. Justin Caldwell is now in his second season with the Glenville State program, and holds a record of 15-19 (7-17 MEC). Todd May is in his fourth campaign with CU. His record with Concord is 52-44, with an MEC record of 35-35.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NABC poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 8-4 against Glenville State and 7-6 against Concord, since the MEC formed for the 2013-14 season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame had a tough battle with No. 14 ranked West Liberty University on Tuesday. The Falcons tied the game at 18 early in the game as Levi Frankland was on fire. He hit the first four three pointers that he attempted and went 5-for-6 from the field in the opening eight minutes of the game. However, West Liberty took the hot touch and pushed their lead to 16 by the end of the first half. WLU shot 59-percent for the game and won 96-70. Frankland finished with 18 points and four assists while Daniel Lott totaled 11 points and nine rebounds. Notre Dame's two conference matchups this season have come against the two teams currently at the top of the MEC standings (Wheeling and West Liberty). NDC looks to grab their first MEC win of the season as they play four more conference games before the holiday break. Levi Frankland is averaging 17.2 points per game, while shooting 47-percent, and grabbing 5.5 rebounds per game. Larenz Thurman averages 12.8 points and 3.7 assists. Dae John Walker-Bey and Drew Scarberry are bringing in seven rebounds, on average. The team shoots 45-percent from the floor.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State started their season with a 4-0 record for the first time in 20 years. However, they faced some difficulties last week and lost to the University of Charleston and California University of Pennsylvania. Interestingly, Glenville State began last season in almost identical fashion with a 4-2 record while scoring 100 points, or more, in their first five contests. But, they ended the 2018-19 campaign with an 11-17 record. In their four wins to begin the 2019-20 season, GSC averaged 118.3 points per game, which included a 146-point output in a 71-point win over Carlow University. Last week, the Pioneers averaged just 77.5 points per game in two losses. Despite the losing streak, the Pioneers rank in the top-10 nationally in many areas. They rank second in three point defense, limiting opponents to 23.6-percent shooting from long range, they are third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1), third in points per game (104.7), third in turnover margin (8.3), fifth in turnovers per game (9.7), sixth in offensive rebounds per game (15.7), seventh in steals per game (11.5), 10th in assists per game (20.3) and 10th in three point field goals attempted per game (12.3). Individually, Phil Bledsoe leads the team in scoring with 22.7 points per game and nine rebounds per game. Tyvon Taylor leads the squad with four assists per contest, Ty Robinson blocks 2.2 shots each game and Hegel Augustine accumulates 2.5 steals per game. Six players are averaging double-digit points.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord lost in their only game last week, falling 98-94 to West Virginia State. Martin Kelly Jr. knocked down a three with 28-seconds to go, pulling Concord within two points, 96-94, but that was as close as the Mountain Lions could get in the loss. This season, Concord has had an odd start. Pitt-Johnstown and Charleston have a combined record of 13-2, and Concord handed both their first loss of the season. On the other hand, CU lost to both Barton College and the University of Mount Olive, who have a combined record of 7-9. Just as Notre Dame is looking for players to step up to fill the void of last season's National Player of the Year, Will Vorhees, Concord is trying to find replacements for Tommy Bolte, who was a two-time All-American. He averaged 30.1 points per game, over his last two seasons. Ethan Heller averages 16 points per game and leads the team. Trey Brisco scores 12.5 points per game, shoots 50-percent from three and dishes out 2.9 assists per game. Simun Kovac is averaging a double-double with 12.1 points and 10.3 rebounds. He is also pulling in four offensive rebounds per game. The Mountain Lions shoot 46-percent from the field.
