This Week: Notre Dame College plays a pair of Mountain East Conference games with a road contest at Davis & Elkins on Thursday, December 12, and a home matchup against West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, December 14.
Records: The Falcons are 7-1 (3-1 MEC) after suffering their first loss against Glenville State and rebounding with a win at Concord. Davis & Elkins is 1-7 (1-3 MEC) this year after earning its first win of the season at home against Wheeling last week. West Virginia Wesleyan is 3-5 (1-3 MEC) after losing three-straight conference games. Wesleyan will play at home against Urbana before heading to South Euclid.
Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her third season as head coach of the Falcons. She holds a record of 45-24, 32-16 MEC. Jason Asbell is in his 12th season at D&E and has an overall record of 132-183 (1-3 MEC). Vicky Bullett is in her fourth season at the helm of West Virginia Wesleyan. The Olympic Gold medalist and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member is 24-65 (19-50 MEC).
Rankings: None of these teams were ranked in the December 9 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
Series History: The Falcons have not yet played Davis & Elkins in their NCAA Division II history. NDC is 11-1 against WVWC. Notre Dame is currently on a five-game winning streak against the Bobcats.
Noting the Falcons: With 26 points last week, Notre Dame guard
Seina Adachi moved into third in the program's all-time leading scorer rankings. With 1,461 points, the senior is looking to become just the third player in NDC history to reach the 1,500 mark. The two to do it before her were Amanda Blazetic (1,600 points; 2002-05) and Martha Nagbe (1,938 points; 2011-16). When Adachi reaches her 1,500th point, she will also be just the sixth player to do so in Mountain East Conference history. Adachi has had an up and down career against West Virginia Wesleyan. In her freshman season, Adachi scored 25 against the Bobcats in her second 25-point game in college. She totaled 38 points in two games against WVWC that season. As a sophomore, Adachi totaled 34, scoring 17 in each game. But last season, Wesleyan seemed to have figured out how to defend the All-MEC guard. Adachi scored just 15 points in two games in 2018-19 with seven in one game and eight in another. The senior will look to rebound this season with the scoring record in her sights.
Noting the Senators: Davis & Elkins has out-rebounded opponents by an average of 4.8 boards this season behind the leadership of Jamiyah Johnson who has averaged 12.1 rebounds per game. Johnson has totaled 15 or more rebounds five times this season already. The Senators may keep their averages in that category high against NDC as the Falcons have a -4.2 rebounding margin so far this season. The two team's rebounding strengths will be matched up this week as Notre Dame has 213 defensive rebounds to D&E's 103 offensive rebounds with both teams having played eight games.
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has struggled scoring this season, totaling more than 60 points in just two games so far. On average the Bobcats have been outscored by 19.5 points. Only one player has eclipsed a 10-point average with Nicole Gilyard's 12.9 per game. While Notre Dame may have to focus on shutting Gilyard down, the Bobcats will have more on their plate trying to defend the three Falcons this year who are averaging over 10 points per game.
