FINDLAY, Ohio –Notre Dame College wrestling competed at the Findlay Open, on Saturday. At the end of the day, seven wrestlers placed in their weight brackets with
Hunter Bray (133 lbs.),
Emilio Fowler (174) and
Jared Campbell (285) all taking second place.
In the 133 lbs. bracket,
Hunter Bray worked his way through five matchups. He defeated Jordan Hamdan, of Michigan State, by decision (4-3). He won the second round with a tech. fall (16-0), the quarterfinal by decision (4-1) and then defeated David Massey, of Mount Union, in a close decision (3-2) in the semifinal.
Emilio Fowler stepped up at 174, winning the first two rounds by decision and the quarterfinal matchup by major decision. He got past Daniel Beemer, from Ashland, by decision (9-4) in the semifinal round. However, he ran into the No. 5 ranked wrestler at 174 lbs. in Ashland's Bret Romanzak and lost by decision, in the final round.
Jared Campbell pinned Jake Shaffer (Seton Hill) to start his day at 285. He won the next two rounds by decision, including a win over Matthew Lloyd, of Michigan State. Possibly the biggest win of the day came against No. 3 ranked Tristen Weirich with a 2-0 decision in the semifinal round.
At 141,
Darese Sparkman won three matches, with two of them being decided by two points, or less. In the semifinal and third place match, Sparkman ran into two Division I wrestlers in Jodan Crace (Michigan State) and Jeffrey Boyd (West Virginia). He took fourth place.
After losing in the first match of the day,
Alonzo Turner received a bye and then won five consecutive matches to take fifth place. During his string of five wins, he pinned Jalen King of West Liberty.
At 285,
Kawaun Deboe was pinned by No. 8 Jacob Robb, of Mercyhurst, in the first round. Later in the day, he would pin Josh McCorkle (Bellarmine), River Fox (Davenport) and Matthew Lloyd (Michigan State) on his way to the fifth place match. He ended the day in sixth place.
Jordon Tague took eighth at 157, but did pin Derek Nicks (Davenport University), Brock Lowery (Ashland University) and Christopher Donathan (Tiffin) in the first three matches of the day.
NDC continues their season with another open, next weekend. They will travel to Painesville, Ohio on Sunday, November 24, to compete in the Lake Erie Storm Open.
