BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference Wrestler of the Week honor has been given to Notre Dame College's
Sandro Ramirez for his work at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open, last Sunday. This conference award has only been announced twice, as this is the first season that the MEC is sponsoring wrestling.
Ramirez was the winner at 149 lbs. this past weekend at Case Western Reserve University. The open was split into the Gold Division and White Division with weight brackets in both. The Falcons' redshirt-freshman wrestled in the White Division.
He defeated James Ost (RIT) by major decision (13-4) in the first round and Alex Samson (Mercyhurst), also by major decision (11-1), in the second. He moved through the quarterfinal after a medical forfeit. Then, Ramirez defeated Ben Sherrill (Ashland) with a 7-4 decision in the semifinal before taking down Ty Raines (Buffalo) by decision (12-9) in the first place match.
Notre Dame had a total of 10 wrestlers place at the open.
The Falcons will travel to the University of Findlay, and compete at the Findlay Open, on November 16.
