This Week: Notre Dame College hosts Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan this week starting with GSC on Thursday, January 10, at 5:30. The Falcons will then play WVWC on Saturday, January 12, at 2 p.m.
Records: The Falcons are currently 7-5 (4-2 MEC) after most recently winning at Ursuline College. Glenville State is 10-2 (5-1 MEC) after winning at Cheyney on Sunday. West Virginia Wesleyan is 2-6 (2-4 MEC) after losing its last two conference games. The Bobcats play at Urbana on Thursday.
Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her second season as the head coach of the NDC women's basketball program. She holds a record of 30-14, 21-7 MEC. Kim Stephens is in her third season as the leader of the Pioneers. She is 65-10, 45-5 MEC. Vicky Bullett is also in her third season at West Virginia Wesleyan. She currently holds a record of 15-43, 13-33 MEC.
Rankings: None of these teams were ranked in the December 6 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
Series History: The Falcons are 2-9 against Glenville State after falling in all three contests last season. This game will be the first time the teams have met since playing in the MEC Championship game on March 4, 2018. NDC is 9-1 against West Virginia Wesleyan and have won the last three games against the Bobcats.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame went into the winter break on a three-game losing streak, but came back at the end of December to win by 17 points on the road. Earlier this year, the Falcons lost two games in a row and followed that up with four-straight wins. But the road to another winning streak starts with a tough Glenville State opponent that NDC has not won against since January 4, 2016. But Notre Dame has a top five defense in the Mountain East this season, allowing an average of 73.2 points and Glenville State is 0-2 when scoring less than 100 points this season.
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State's 106.7 points per game leads the NCAA DII by 16 points. The Pioneers have scored over 100 points 32 times since Kim Stephens took over the program prior to the 2016-17 season. Stephens has coached against Notre Dame five times in her first two years, and four of those times her team was held under 90 points. This season, Glenville State is 1-1 when held under 90 points, with a 98-77 loss at Fairmont State and a 78-75 win at Johnson C. Smith.
Noting the Bobcats: While Glenville State is the top scoring team in the nation, West Virginia Wesleyan ranks in the bottom 40 with just 59.0 points per game. The Bobcats are the only team in the MEC to score less than 65 points on average. The slow pace of play has been an advantage on the defensive end as well as WVWC is the second-ranked defensive team in the league. Allowing 67.9 points per game, the Bobcats are one of two teams to allow less than 70 points per game.
