Men's basketball to host Wheeling Jesuit and Urbana

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball hosts Wheeling Jesuit University on January 23 at 7:30 p.m. and then Urbana University on January 26 at 4 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are 11-5, overall, and hold a 7-3 MEC record. WJU is 2-14 and 1-9 in the MEC while Urbana is 5-9 with a conference record of 3-7.

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig is the head coach of the Falcons and is in his sixth season with an overall record of 81-84 and he is 52-68 in the MEC. John Peckinpaugh is in his first season as the head coach of the Cardinals. In two years at Urbana, Nick Dials holds a record of 9-33, overall, and 6-26 in the MEC.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NABC Coaches poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 2-9 against Wheeling Jesuit since 2013-14 and against Urbana, NDC holds a record of 12-4 since the 2001-02 season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame split their two games last week, defeating Shepherd University, 87-78, on Thursday and then falling to Fairmont State by a score of 97-86, on Saturday. Will Vorhees was named MEC Co-Player of the Week after averaging 27 points and 11.5 rebounds. He had a dominant performance against Shepherd where he scored 22 first half points and finished with 38 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. He shot 62-percent. In the two games last week, Larenz Thurman scored a total of 54 points and had nine assists. He dropped 31 points against Fairmont State and scored or assisted on the first 17 points of the second half in that contest. Against Shepherd, Drew Scarberry knocked down his 200th career three pointer, becoming just the fourth player at NDC to do so. Will Vorhees is near the top of NCAA Division II in several categories. He is second with 12 double-doubles, ninth in points-per-game (23.9), 17th in total points (359), ninth in total field goals made, fourth in offensive rebounds-per-game (4.07), 21st in defensive rebounds-per-game (7.07), sixth in rebounds-per-game (11.1) and 10th in total rebounds (167). Vorhees is also second in the MEC with 1.47 blocks-per-game. Larenz Thurman is ninth in the conference in points-per-game at 18.5 per night. He's also averaging 4.85 assists, which is fourth in the conference. Thurman is eighth in the conference with a free throw percentage of .838 and third with a three point percentage of .438. NDC is third in the MEC allowing just 78.4 points-per-game and they limit teams to a field goal percentage of .430, which is the best average in the conference. The Falcons rank second with a free throw percentage of .776. The team is also third in blocked shots (3.50) and second in offensive rebounding (12.63).

Chasing History: Will Vorhees needs 17 rebounds to reach 1,000 for his career. He would be the first player in Mountain East Conference history to have 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit lost to Concord, 88-68, on Thursday. However, they won their first conference game of the season on Saturday when they defeated UVa-Wise, 78-68. The game with the Cavaliers was tied at 48 with about 11 minutes to go in the second half, but a 16-6 run by the Cardinals pushed Wheeling Jesuit out in front for good. Emmanuel Ansong scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in the second half of Wheeling Jesuit's win. In just his fifth game of the season, Ansong totaled 22 points and 14 rebounds. Steve Cannady and Franck Kamgain each had 17 points while Tariq Woody added 13 points off the bench in the win over UVa-Wise. Woody is ranked 17th in the country with a shooting percentage of 61.1-percent and he hauls in 7.3 rebounds-per-contest. Franck Kamgain leads the team with 14.1 points-per-game and he ranks third in the conference with two steals each game. 

Noting the Blue Knights: Urbana pulled off a big upset over Fairmont State, who was undefeated in conference play until last Thursday. The Blue Knights won, 78-76, with Matt Treacy going off for 33 points and six made threes. Malik Jacobs scored 18 points and was the only other Urbana player to score in double-digits. Urbana also won the rebounding battle (31-30) and had more assists (12-7) in the game. UU then dropped their game over the weekend with Shepherd, 78-66. Urbana led by four at halftime, but the Rams outscored the Blue Knights, 47-31, in the final 20 minutes. Matt Treacy had 21 points and connected on five three pointers. Treacy was named Co-MEC Player of the Week. He averaged 27 points and shot 61-percent from long range. On the season, Malik Jacobs averages 16.4 points-per-game which is 14th best in the conference. He also leads the team, and ranks 12th, with 6.6 rebounds, on average. Jacobs ranks 10th in the MEC with a field goal percentage of .494 and third with an .882 free throw percentage. Ethan Snapp is now first in the conference in three point percentage at .567, while Matt Treacy ranks eighth with a .414 three point percentage. Jordan Bradley steals the ball 1.83 times per game which ranks him seventh in the conference. The Blue Knights are fourth in the MEC in three point percentage at .390 and Urbana is also ranked in the top five in the MEC in blocked shots (2.43 per game) and steals (6.71).
