Box Score 1 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Friday afternoon, Notre Dame College took game one from Wheeling Jesuit University by a score of 3-1. However, rain put a halt to game two, which was suspended in the 8th inning, after Wheeling Jesuit had just taken a 1-0 lead.
Through the first two-and-a-half innings of game one, the two teams had a combined three baserunners. The Falcons (18-28, 13-16 MEC) changed that in the bottom of the third. Following two strikeouts to begin the frame, senior
Amy Hoover singled to left field, and then senior
Myranda Rowland singled down the left field line. The Wheeling Jesuit left fielder, Taylor DiPerna, misplayed the Rowland hit, and it rolled past her. This allowed Rowland to advance to second and Hoover to score the first run of the game. Rowland scored when junior
Shelby Stephens hit a long RBI single to the right field fence.
WJU (22-22, 18-11 MEC) quickly cut the lead in half with a two out home run by Ashley Ledbetter in the fifth inning.
Stephens answered back for NDC with a home run, her fourth of the season, to lead off the sixth inning. That put the Falcons up 3-1.
The top three batters in the Notre Dame lineup combined to hit .625, with three runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Taylor Olson (10-14) picked up her team-leading 10th victory of the season after pitching a complete game, allowing one run on six hits and she struck out eight hitters.
For Wheeling Jesuit, Mallory Chapman (15-13) was saddled with the loss after allowing only three runs and two earned runs. She struck out six hitters. Alaina York had two hits.
In game two, very few runners were able to reach scoring position against the pitchers who were throwing in the circle. Notre Dame had a runner reach second base in the second inning and the fifth, both on sacrifice bunts. Wheeling Jesuit had a runner take second base with a steal and then third base on a passed ball, in the fifth inning.
The Falcons came close to scoring in the fifth inning when sophomore
Alyssa Larson pinch-hit, singled to right field and moved to second on a bunt by senior
Nicole Paolucci. Hoover singled up the middle, and Larson tried to score, but was gunned down at home plate with a near perfect throw by the center fielder, York.
In the top of the eighth inning, York and Cassie Holstein reached base with bunts for Wheeling Jesuit. With two outs, Chapman singled up the middle, allowing York to score and Holstein to advance to third. Chapman also ran to second base, on the throw.
Lightning was then spotted and the game went into a delay, which continued while the rain started. The game was suspended and a make-up date has not been announced.
At the time of the delay, York had two hits, again. She was the only hitter in either game to have a multi-hit game for the Cardinals. Erin Unterbrink pitched seven, scoreless innings and struck out eight batters.
For Notre Dame, freshman
McKenzie Zigmont threw 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run. She struck out nine hitters.
The Falcons play their last regular season game, at home, today. They take on West Liberty University and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
