Softball on road for conference games this weekend

This week: Notre Dame College will play two road doubleheaders this weekend with games at Charleston on Friday, April 13, and at West Virginia State on Saturday, April 14. The games at Charleston are scheduled to begin at 4 and 6 p.m. while the games at WVSU will start at 1 and 3 p.m.

Schedule Changes: The doubleheader at Charleston was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 15, but have been moved up to Friday.

Records: Notre Dame is currently 10-23 and 6-12 in the Mountain East Conference. Charleston is 19-16, 6-11 MEC while West Virginia State is 22-14, 10-8 MEC.

Coaches Corner: Amy Kyler is in her 12th season as head coach at NDC and holds a record of 278-264-1. Kim Stiles is in her second year with the Charleston Golden Eagles. Stiles went 37-21 in her debut season and has a 56-37 record during her time at UC.  Mattie Best is in her first season as the head coach of the WVSU softball program after serving as the Interim last year. Best holds a record of 47-43.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the April 11 NFCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons 2-7 against Charleston and 3-6 against West Virginia State since joining the Mountain East in 2014.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame will look to get back into the win column this weekend after a tough 1-3 stint last weekend at home. The Falcons win that weekend came in comeback fashion after Fairmont State built a 3-0 lead. NDC went on to win 5-4 after a sacrifice fly from Amy Hoover brought in the go-ahead run. Multiple individuals have had solid performances recently with Erin Calhoun hitting .411 (7-17) in six games last week with two runs, four RBIs and a home run and Taylor Olson pitching in five games to lower her season ERA from 5.45 to 4.97. But senior Myranda Rowland has been the most impressive recently. The senior has only started 14 of the teams 33 games, but has made noise since her return to the lineup on April 5 (her last game before that was March 19). Rowland has recorded at least one hit in every games this month so far except one and has tallied two hits in four of the past five games, moving her batting average to .425. She now ranks fifth in the MEC in batting average and eighth in on-base percentage (.450).

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston has been impressive on the offensive end this season as they rank third in the MEC with a batting average of .295. They also rank third in runs scored (144) and lead the league in triples (10). Despite ranking sixth in the conference with a pitching ERA of 3.01, the Golden Eagles have been great at striking out batters. Along with UVa-Wise, the team ranks second with 165 strike outs. But UC has also walked the fourth-most batters this season (80). Haleigh Christopher provides much of the scoring for the Golden Eagles as she is fourth in the MEC in RBIs (23)

Noting the Yellow Jackets: West Virginia State has played more games (36) than any other team in the Mountain East this season and have scored more runs (156) than any other team as well, despite a .268 batting average that ranks eighth. WVSU has done well in the field this year as they rank second in the MEC with a .972 fielding percentage. The Yellow Jackets also have a strong presence in the circle with a third-best 2.28 team EAR and a league-high nine shutouts. Even though they have pitched the most innings, their pitching staff has allowed the third-fewest walks.
