This week: Notre Dame College will play in Glenville, W.Va. against Glenville State College on March 30 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and then West Virginia Wesleyan College on March 31 in Buckhannon, W.Va. at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Falcons open up the home portion of their schedule with Mercyhurst University, which is scheduled for April 3 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Records: Notre Dame is currently 8-13 and 4-4 in the Mountain East Conference. Glenville State is 10-14 and 1-7 in the Mountain East Conference while WVWC is 13-8 and 6-2 in conference. Mercyhurst holds a record of 3-15, overall.
Coaches Corner: Amy Kyler is in her 12th season as head coach at NDC and holds a record of 276-254-1. Kristen Tunno is in her fourth season as head coach of Glenville State, leading GSC to a 13-36 (7-23 MEC) record in 2017. Steve Warner is currently 1013-359-1 in his 26th season at West Virginia Wesleyan. Leanne Baker is in her fifth season as head coach of the Lakers and has a record of 63-122-2.
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
Series History: The Falcons are 6-2 against Glenville State since 2014 and 5-5 against West Virginia Wesleyan since 2014. The Falcons went a combined 4-0 against the Pioneers and Bobcats last season. The Falcons are 2-0 all-time against MU, but the teams have not played since 2013.
Noting the Falcons: In NDC's first game of the weekend, they fell to Fairmont State University 11-8 on March 25, but scored sixruns in innings four through six. Five players had multi-hit games, including
Shelby Stephens and
Halli Swiger, who each had three hits. The Falcons lost 8-4 to the Fighting Falcons in game two. NDC bounced back with a sweep of Shepherd University on March 26. In game one, the Falcons won 3-1 and
Katelyn Rheude went 3-for-3 with a run.
McKenzie Zigmont started the game in the pitcher's circle and threw a complete game with six strike outs. In game two, NDC won in comeback fashion with two runs in the seventh inning, to grab a 4-3 win. Six different players had one hit and
Taylor Olson picked up her 5th win of the season as she pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.
Shelby Stephens now leads the Falcons with a .357 batting average and 25 hits. She also has 33 total bases this season and a slugging percentage of .471.
Halli Swiger leads the team with four doubles and 13 RBI.
McKenzie Zigmont has a 2.51 ERA in 28 2/3 innings pitched and three complete games. She also has struck out 17 and issued only seven walks.
Taylor Olson leads the team with 27 strikeouts. Zigmont (1.95) and
Mikayla Grajczyk (1.96) are five and six in ERA in the Mountain East Conference.
Noting the Pioneers: In Glenville State's four games last weekend, they led at one point in every game, but hung on to win just one game. Their only win came against Concord University on March 24, in the second game of the double-header. After giving up the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pioneers scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hannah Wright went 4-for-4 in the game and Ally Brown hit 2-for-3 with four RBI. Brown also picked up the win, despite allowing six runs.
GSC is 3-7 over their past 10 games. Kim Ellis holds a .386 batting average and is tied for the team lead with 22 hits. Hannah Wright has seven doubles, while Ally Brown has knocked in 14 runs. Brown and Paranda Uber have 31 total bases. Brown leads the Pioneers in ERA at 3.89, over 76 1/3 innings. She has five complete games along with one save.
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan swept Concord and the University of Virginia's College at Wise on March 25 and 26, respectively. In the four games, the Bobcats outscored their opponents, 26-6. Hannah Vet pitched three complete games, allowing two earned runs and struck out seven. Sara Scoone had eight hits in four games and Krista Waggoner added seven hits in the four games.
West Virginia Wesleyan is 7-3 over their last 10 games. Madison Castro has helped by batting .500 over 16 games with 26 hits. Krista Waggoner currently has hit .400 with five doubles and 13 RBI with a slugging percentage of .523. Lauryn King is tied for second in the league with 19 runs scored. Hannah Vet has been dominant this season with an ERA of 1.49 and a record of 10-3, leading the conference in wins. She also has 11 complete games and 52 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings pitched.
Noting the Lakers: In their first game since March 9, MU played a double header with Lake Erie College. They split, losing the first on March 26 and then winning the second by a score of 9-7. Jenna Balducci went 3-for-3 and three other players had two hit games in the win.
Sarah Koshko leads the squad with 17 hits, four doubles and 11 RBI. Cassandra Egelston is second on the team with 14 hits. Tori Pierucci is first on the team in ERA at 2.69 but has a record of 1-6. She has recorded five complete games in 57 1/3 innings.
