Softball hits the road for two more conference double-headers

This week: Notre Dame College will play Fairmont State University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on March 25 and Shepherd University at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on March 26.

Records: Notre Dame is currently 6-11 and 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Fairmont State is 7-11 on the season and 3-1 in the MEC. Shepherd holds a 10-4 record with a 3-1 MEC mark.

Coaches Corner: Amy Kyler is in her 12th season as head coach at NDC and holds a record of 274-252-1. John Light led FSU to a 19-31 record last season, 12-20 in the MEC and Marissa Leslie is in her first season as head coach of the Rams.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the NFCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 6-8 against Fairmont State since 2014 and 4-11 against Shepherd since 2013.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame lost their first game to Wheeling Jesuit University on March 18, but then picked up the win, 2-1, in game two. Taylor Olson picked up the win, going four scoreless innings of relief. Erin Calhoun had two hits and Amy Hoover had a triple in the fourth inning which brought in the two runs for NDC. The Falcons split with West Liberty University on March 19. They won the first game 7-3 behind 6.2 strong innings by Olson who allowed two unearned runs. Four players had a multi-hit game, including Myranda Rowland, who had three hits.

In two conference double-headers over the weekend, Hoover went 5-for-13 with three RBI and Erin Calhoun went 5-for-12 with three RBI. In the pitching circle, Taylor Olson picked up two wins and allowed one earned run in 12.2 innings. Hoover leads the team with a betting average of .412. Halli Swiger has 11 RBI and Shelby Stephens had 24 total bases, followed closely by Kim Crookston who has 22.

Noting the Fighting Falcons: Fairmont State defeated Glenville State in both games. In game one, the Fighting Falcons won 5-4 on a walk-off single by Hannah Absalom. Jenny Stubbs led off and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Rachel Bias was the winnings pitcher, allowing two runs on seven innings. In the second game, an 8-3 victory, four hitters had a multi-hit game. Andie Baughman and Courtney Worcester each had three hits. In their 4-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, Jordan Lewis hit a walk-off single. Stubbs recorded three hits and Hannah Clunk was the winning pitcher, as she pitched a complete game.

Jenny Stubbs currently hits .459 with three home runs, 10 RBI and 40 total bases.  Andie Baughman leads the team with six double while Beth Cook holds an on-base percentage of .518. Hannah Clunk has pitched 29 innings and has an ERA of 3.38. Darby Petersen has pitched eight innings and has not allowed a run.

Noting the Rams: Over the weekend, Shepherd swept Glenville State College (4-3 and 7-2) and then won the second game of their double-header with West Virginia Wesleyan College by a score of 8-5. In the Glenville series, Lori Sturgill went 6-for-6 with four RBI in the batter's box. Sturgill picked up the win in the pitching circle in the second game, allowing two runs in six innings. Morgan Cox had four hits over the two games. The Rams scored eight runs on six hits in their second game with WVWC. Sturgill got the win even though she allowed three runs in 2.2 innings.

Lori Sturgill currently holds a batting average of .444 and has a record of 4-2 in the pitching circle. Rachel Taylor has 11 RBI on the season, 25 total bases and a slugging percentage of .595. Taylor Stocks leads the team with an ERA of 2.33 while Kaitlin Munda is 3-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 39 innings.
