This week: Notre Dame College hosts Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan this week. On Thursday, February 8, NDC plays the Pioneers at 5:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, February 10, Wesleyan comes to Murphy Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. tip.
Â
Records: The Falcons are 16-7, 12-4 MEC after winning their games at Shepherd and Fairmont State last week. The Pioneers are 21-1, 16-0 MEC and are currently riding a 20-game winning streak. The Bobcats are 7-15, 5-11 MEC after splitting games last week.
Â
Coaches Corner:Â Lauren Macer is in her first season as the head coach of the Notre Dame women's basketball program. She currently has a record of 16-7. Kim Stephens is in her second season as the leader of the GSC program. She is 45-7 in her career. Vicky Bullett is in her first year with Wesleyan and has gone 7-15 this season.
Â
Rankings: Glenville State was ranked No. 11 in the January 30 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll. Neither of the other teams playing received votes.
Â
Series History: NDC is 2-7 against Glenville State since joining the MEC prior to the 2013-14 season. The Pioneers defeated the Falcons earlier this season and are the only team in the conference with a winning record against Notre Dame. NDC has been more successful against Wesleyan and lead the series 8-1 after winning earlier in the year.
Â
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame is currently on a four-game win streak, which includes three road appearances. The Falcons are also on a 13-game win streak in conference home games dating back to last season. No. 11 Glenville State will likely be the best MEC team to play in Murphy Gymnasium this season as they are the second-best scoring team in NCAA Division II with 99.5 points scored on average. Only two conference teams, Notre Dame and Charleston have held the Pioneers to under 85 points this season. Those three games have some of the closest games GSC has played this season so look for the Falcons to be active on the defensive end.
Â
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has yet to suffer a loss since its second game of the season at West Chester. In their nine road games since that loss, the Pioneers have averaged over 103 points and won by an average margin of nearly 33 points. Despite their domination on other teams' courts, GSC played its closest conference game of the season at Charleston, winning 69-63. Since that game the Pioneers have been back on their game as they have won each of their past three road games by at least 30 points, including most recently with a 48-point victory at West Virginia State. Notre Dame hasn't allowed a visiting conference team to score more than 80 points since January 3, 2017 when Glenville State dropped 111.
Â
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan has struggled scoring this season as they rank last or second-to-last in all conference offensive scoring categories. Where the Bobcats do succeed on the offensive end is in their passing. Of their 514 made field goals this season, 314 of them have been assisted. This 61.0 percent of baskets made off assists ranks second in the MEC behind West Liberties 64.3 percent. Wesleyan and WLU the only two teams in the league to assist on more than 58 percent of their makes.
