Notre Dame wrestling wins big on senior day

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – No. 2 Notre Dame College won every match in their final home dual meet of the season against Davenport University, and the Falcons were victorious by a score of 45-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons started strong on Senior Day, after honoring seniors Ivan McClay, Drew Walker and Robert Janis in the middle of the mat.

"I felt real good about our three seniors that we had out there," said head coach Frank Romano. "Ivan McClay, a defending National Champion at 125 lbs., wrestled very well along with Drew Walker and Robert Janis. They've done a really good job and to get to your senior year in collegiate wrestling is very difficult, that's why there are so few seniors on most teams. I feel real proud for them, and their families were here. It was just a great day."

McClay gave NDC five early points with a technical fall against Caleb Braley at 125 lbs. Walker won with a pin at 2:20 against Jordan Ringler at 141 lbs.

Immediately following Walker, sophomore Taylor Misuna defeated Tyler Brewer with a tech fall, 17-2, putting Notre Dame ahead 22-0, on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Fernando Silva (157 lbs.) and freshman Logan Hall (197) each won by major decision before sophomore Kameron Teacher pinned Weston DeHaven (1:12).

"We feel real good about today's competition," Romano said. "The guys wrestled real well on their feet and they looked in good shape. We had a couple different people in there this week as opposed to what we had last week but now we have set our sights on Maryville, which is a big weekend for us. It will be a triple dual in St. Louis at Maryville University. We're going to get back at it on Monday to get the guys ready for next week."

Notre Dame also sent 12 wrestlers to compete at the Edinboro Open in Edinboro, Pa., including seniors Tyler Walker and Tom Szymula. Walker took eighth place after he lost in the second round of the championship bracket but then went 3-1 in the consolation bracket.

Notre Dame will wrestle next, at the Maryville Duals in St. Louis, Mo. The competition will take place on February 11.
