Fairmont State defeats Notre Dame in Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Fairmont State University used hot shooting and an evenly distributed offense on Saturday afternoon to beat Notre Dame College, 105-65.

Fairmont State (17-5, 13-3 MEC) responded quickly after Notre Dame (5-17, 3-13 MEC) grabbed the lead a couple times, early in the first half.

The Falcons scored the first two points of the game on a layup by redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini. They retook the lead at the 17:26-mark when another Cugini layup went through, giving NDC a 6-5 lead. But, FSU scored the next 13 points and led 18-6 with 14:48 to go before halftime.

The Fighting Falcons led Notre Dame 59-33 at the break. For NDC, Cugini had nine points and five rebounds and redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry added 10 points, going 4-for-5 from the field. Fairmont State's Caleb Davis and Jason Jolly each scored 11 points. As a team, FSU shot 61-percent overall, 65-percent from three and 89-percent from the free throw line.

In the second half, Fairmont State outscored NDC 46-32. Freshman Cole Hayes scored 11 points, while going 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe in the second half. Nine players scored for Fairmont State in the second half. Cole VonHandorf recorded 10 points off of the bench.

Cugini finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Scarberry and Hayes each had 14 points. The Falcons shot 43-percent for the game and grabbed 31 rebounds.

For FSU, seven players scored in double-digits. D'Ondre Stockman led the way with 15 points and shot 57-percent, and connected on three, three pointers. Davis and VonHandorf each had 13 points. The Fighting Falcons shot 51-percent from the floor and 43-percent from three. Fairmont State received 58 points from their bench.

Notre Dame will come home and host Glenville State College on February 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
