Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Jacob Bunner

NDC falls to Glenville State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Glenville State College shot the ball very efficiently in the first half in their 85-64 victory over Notre Dame College on Thursday night.

After a slow start for both teams, Notre Dame (5-18, 3-14 MEC) was able to gain some traction on offense and used a three pointer by freshman Levi Frankland to tie the game at nine. A free throw by senior Kyauta Taylor put NDC up by one and then freshman Cole Hayes capped the 7-0 run with a three pointer at the 14:25 mark. The Falcons led 13-9.

Glenville State (6-17, 4-13 MEC) then went on a 14-2 run and with 10:14 remaining in the first half, GSC led 23-15.

The Falcons fell down by as many as 14 points and at the halftime break, NDC trailed Glenville State by 11 points, 40-29.

Notre Dame was led in scoring by Hayes, who had eight points in the first half. Redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini added seven points and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Darius Nunn and Jon Dunmyer each recorded eight points for Glenville State in the half. The Pioneers shot 62-percent from the floor and 50-percent from three point range.

Redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry hit a layup with 18:10 remaining in the second half to cut Glenville State's lead to 42-33. However, nine points would be as close as NDC would get in the second half.

Theo Brown went 6-for-8 in the second half and scored 15 points while grabbing five rebounds for GSC. Brooks Ely scored 10 points for the Pioneers, who shot 47-percent, as a team, in the final stanza. Cugini recorded nine points and five rebounds for NDC.

"Our transition defense was better than it has been and I thought we took a step forward with that," head coach Tim Koenig said. "Offensively, we had a lot of looks but couldn't knock them down. You don't look as good when don't make shots and that can be deflating at times. We have to keep moving the ball, moving bodies and we have to put the ball in the hole."

Glenville State's Brown finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds while Nunn added 13 points and eight assists. The Pioneers shot 54-percent in the game, 82-percent from the free throw line and added 38 points in the paint. Glenville State has now won three of their last four contests.

Cugini and Hayes finished the game with 16 points and Cugini grabbed nine rebounds. Scarberry had 10 points and five rebounds. The Falcons scored 16 points off turnovers.

Koenig knows the Falcons will have to shoot better in their next game, against West Virginia Wesleyan, but expects a good fight from both teams.

"We have our work cut out for us because their three bigs are really good and they have some guys on the perimeter that can really shoot," he said. "It's going to be a battle. Obviously we have to perform better than 33-percent if we want to win the game."

Notre Dame will host West Virginia Wesleyan College on February 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
