WISE, Va. – Notre Dame College led with five minutes left in the game but the University of Virginia's College at Wise was able to get past the Falcons on their senior day and win 94-84, on Saturday night.
Notre Dame (5-21, 3-17 MEC) led for much of the first half even as both teams traded buckets. After trailing by four at the beginning of the game, the Falcons used an 18-8 run to take an 18-12 lead with 15:35 to go in the first half. NDC knocked down five three pointers during the run.
A three pointer by redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry with 13:31 remaining put NDC up by seven points, 21-14.
UVa-Wise (13-13, 11-9 MEC) kept the game close, and cut their deficit to one point, 26-25, at the 9:27-mark as Chance Sheffey hit a three pointer.
The Cavaliers grabbed the lead, 31-29, with two free throws by Taiwo Badmus with 6:48 to go before halftime. However, UVa-Wise allowed the Falcons to take re-take the lead, and were unable to grab the advantage again before halftime.
At the half, NDC led 42-37. Scarberry had 11 points and went 3-for-3 from the three point line while redshirt-junior
Angelo Cugini had eight points and six rebounds for Notre Dame. The Falcons shot 59-percent from three point range. Badmus added 10 points and five rebounds for UVa-Wise in the first half.
"We executed what we wanted to do in the first half," head coach
Tim Koenig said. "We had good spacing and ran our sets. Getting stops and then having open threes in transition was really big for us."
Virginia-Wise tied the game twice in the first six minutes of the second half, but did not grab the lead until the 12:50-mark when a Badmus layup gave the Cavaliers a 54-52 advantage.
With 5:04 to go, Cugini knocked down two free throws to put the Falcons ahead, 74-72, but UVa-Wise took the lead on the next possession and did not give it back.
UVa-Wise increased their lead late by knocking down free throws.
"They switched a lot of screening action down the stretch," Koenig said. "And the breaks did not go our way tonight."
For the Falcons, Taylor scored 22 points in the second half and finished with 28 points, going 8-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-8 from three point range. Scarberry had 20 points while Cugini added 14 points and 11 rebounds. NDC finished the game by shooting 43-percent from the floor and from three point range.
Virginia-Wise received 31 points and 14 rebounds from the reigning co-MEC Player of the Week, Badmus. He scored 21 points in the second half and finished the game with 10 made shots and 10 made free throws. Michal Seals had 17 points in the second half and wrapped up with 22 points in the game. He made all eight of his free throws. Yesid Mosquera-Perea finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Koenig spoke about the difficulty of stopping UVa-Wise's offense.
"We struggled with defensive rebounding and guarding penetration," he said. "The dribble penetration hurt us and a couple of late turnovers really hurt us and allowed for run-out layups."
Notre Dame will come home to take on No. 5 West Liberty University on February 21. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
