NDC men's basketball prepares for two big conference games this week

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball is on the road this week as they battle Concord University on February 15 at 7:30 p.m. They will then play at The University of Virginia's College at Wise on February 17 at 4 p.m.

Records: The Falcons currently hold a 5-19 overall record and are 3-15 in the Mountain East Conference. Concord has an overall record of 12-12 and an MEC record of 8-10. UVa-Wise is currently 11-13 and 9-9 in conference.

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig is currently in his fifth season at the helm of the Falcons and holds an overall record of 69-76 and has an MEC record of 44-62. Todd May is in his second season as head coach and he holds a record of 23-29 and 15-25 in the MEC. Blake Mellinger is in his fifth season, he is 37-100 and 27-79 in the MEC.

Rankings: None of these teams received votes in the NABC Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 5-5 all-time against CU since 2013-14. NDC beat the Mountain Lions 86-76, at home, on November 18. Notre Dame holds an 8-2 record against the Cavaliers since 2013-14. UVa-Wise defeated NDC by a score of 102-101 in double-overtime on November 20.

Noting the Falcons: The Falcons lost to Glenville State College last week at home, by a score of 85-64. Angelo Cugini scores 16 points and nine rebounds while Cole Hayes also scored 16 points and hit four threes. The Falcons shot just 33-percent in the game, but did score 16 points off turnovers. West Virginia Wesleyan College beat NDC 62-49, on February 10. Oliver Megins put together his first double-double of his collegiate career. The senior scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor.

Kyauta Taylor is averaging 17.5 points-per-contest, ranking seventh in the MEC and he leads the conference in free throw percentage (87-percent). He is third in steals-per-game (2.04). Angelo Cugini is pulling down 8.1 rebounds each game which is fourth best in the conference. Drew Scarberry makes 2.92 three pointers every game, ranking third in the MEC. As a team, the Falcons are ninth in NCAA Division II with 285 three pointers made this season and ninth in the nation, averaging 11.9 three pointers made per game. NDC is fourth in the MEC with a three point percentage of 37.2-percent this season and they trail only West Liberty in the conference in three pointers made. The Falcons are still among the conference's best in assists as they are third in the MEC by accumulating 15.75 assists-per-game.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord defeated Shepherd University 76-70 on February 8. The Mountain Lions shot 40-percent from the floor and 41-percent from three point range in their home win. Tommy Bolte dropped 42 points. He shot 12-for-26, overall, 7-for-13 from three and 11-for-12 from the free throw line. Trey Brisco was the only other player to score in double-digits as he had 11 points. CU stayed close with Fairmont State University on February 10, but lost at home, 86-80. The Mountain Lions only trailed by a point at halftime. Bolte finished with 39 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. He made 16 of his 27 shots in the game. Concord shot 47-percent from the floor but only 19-percent from three. Fairmont State shot 50-perccent in the game.

Tommy Bolte was co-player of the week in the MEC. He averaged 40.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and six assists. This season, Bolte leads the NCAA Division II in scoring at 29.9 points-per-game and he is third in the nation with 220 field goals made and in field goals attempted with 441. He is 14th in the Nation in free throws made with 139. Bolte is first in the conference in scoring by 7.6 points. Bolte is also fourth in the conference with 1.9 steals-per-game and leads the conference in minutes played (36.8 per game). B.J. Hamlet is seventh in the nation in three point field goals attempted at 217. He is second in the MEC with 75 three pointers made. Concord has the second lowest field goal percentage in the MEC at 43.2-percent. However, they hold teams to a field goal percentage of 44.9-percent and 32-percent from three, which ranks third and first in the conference, respectively. The Mountain Lions grab 12.75 offensive rebounds-per-game which is third in the MEC.

Noting the Cavaliers: UVa-Wise upset Fairmont State on February 8 to start their big week. Leading by two points at the halftime break, the Cavaliers outscored the Fighting Falcons by six in the second half to win, 90-82. Taiwo Badmus went off for 38 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 13-for-22 from the field and going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Yesid Mosquera –Perea added 20 points and Michal Seals recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. UVa-Wise scored 48 points in the paint. The Cavaliers also took down Shepherd by a score of 70-63, and the Rams were held to just 30 second half points. Badmus added 31 points and 12 rebounds. Mosquera-Perea gave the Falcons 17 points and six rebounds and Seals dished out 10 assists. The Cavaliers shot 46-percent and 41-percent from three point range.

Taiwo Badmus was co-player of the week in the MEC averaged 34.5 points and 12.5 rebounds last week. Badmus is currently third in scoring in the conference with 21.3 points-per-game and is second in rebounding with 9.6 per game. Badmus has blocked 33 shots this season, ranking third in the conference. Michal Seals averages 6.88 assists-per-game, which is first in the MEC and 10th in NCAA Division II. Seals also takes care of the ball and has a 2.62 assists/turnover ratio, which is second best in the MEC. He is one of 16 players in Division II to record a triple-double, putting up 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against West Virginia State on January 17. The Cavaliers average the lowest field goal percentage in the conference at 42-percent. They are also third in the conference with 79 blocked shots this season. UVa-Wise hauls in 26.54 defensive rebounds which is third in the conference.
