Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Jacob Bunner

Notre Dame hangs with Concord, but falls short in loss to Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Falcons shot 48-percent from the field and freshman Levi Frankland tied a season-high with 22 points on Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Falcons fell to Concord University by a score of 95-86.

Concord (13-12, 9-10 MEC) led by as many as 11 points in the first eight minutes of the game. But Notre Dame (5-20, 3-16 MEC) fought back and used a 19-7 run to take a 31-30 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first half. This was the Falcons' first lead since the score was 5-2. During the run, Notre Dame hit four threes on four consecutive possessions.

In the final seven minutes of the half, the lead changed 11 times in a back-and-forth contest all the way to the end of the half. A three pointer by Darian Peterson with 23-seconds remaining put the Mountain Lions ahead, 43-42 going into the half.

At halftime, Frankland had 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from three point range. Freshman Cole Hayes scored eight points and senior Kyauta Taylor added five points, four assists and three steals. For Concord, Tommy Bolte made seven shots and had 19 points while Peterson added nine points.

CU jumped out to a five point lead, 47-42, at the beginning of the second half. However, Taylor knocked down a jumper with 14:07 left to cut the deficit to two points, 56-54. And at the 12:05-mark, Frankland's jumper tied the game at 58.

The Falcons would tie the game one more time, but they would not be able to take the lead. With 1:56 remaining, the Falcons only trailed by five points after redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry hit a three pointer.

Concord extended their lead with free throws in the final 1:16 of the game.

"Late in the second half it was anybody's game," said head coach Tim Koenig. "Our shot selection was questionable late and we gave up some tough offensive rebounds. Concord made plays down the stretch."

For the Mountain Lions, Bolte, who leads NCAA Division II in scoring, had 17 points in the second half and finished with 36 points and shot 11-for-22 from the field and 10-for-11 at the free throw line. B.J. Hamlet scored 11 points in the second half and ended the game with 17 points. Concord shot 46-percent from the field and 95-percent from the charity stripe.

"Bolte has turned himself into a great player," said Koenig. "We wanted to keep him out of the paint and off of the free throw line and have him take guarded shots. He did hit some late free throws when we had to foul."

Frankland scored 22 points and went 7-for-13 from the field. Scarberry had 17 points while Taylor scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished seven assists and had five steals. Both redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini and senior Oliver Megins scored 12 points and recorded seven rebounds. The Falcons shot 48-percent in the game and 39-percent from three.

"Levi (Frankland) did a nice job and he kept us in the game," Koenig mentioned. "KT (Taylor) did a way better job tonight and passed the ball and didn't over dribble. I'm proud of the way he defended and I'm proud of his attention to detail and his unselfish play."

The Falcons will play their final road game of the season when they travel to the University of Virginia's College at Wise on February 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
