Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Jacob Bunner

NDC shoots well at 55-percent, but falls to Shepherd on the road

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Notre Dame College hung with Shepherd University during much of Thursday evening's contest, but could not make a late push to grab a road victory, falling 107-90.

Notre Dame (5-16, 3-12 MEC) fell down by three points, three separate times before they tied the game up at 14 after sophomore Jack Kelsheimer knocked down a three pointer with 13 minutes remaining.

The game would remain close before Shepherd (13-8, 9-6 MEC) went up by double-digits at the 9:40-mark when Devin Smith hit a jump shot.

NDC would cut the lead down to seven points with a three pointer from redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. However, SU would score the final five points of the half and go into the break with a 52-40 advantage.

To start the second half, the Falcons put together a 16-8 run which brought them within four points, 60-56, with 15:15 to go. During the offensive outburst, senior Oliver Megins knocked down back-to-back threes.

From that point, Shepherd scored the next nine points and continued to add onto their lead. NDC would cut the deficit to eight points, 95-87, with just under two minutes to play, but that would be as close as they could get.

"We executed well on offense and did well with our screen the screener action," head coach Tim Koenig said. "We just have to play better and we have to go over the top of shooters. They got rolling tonight and started hitting tough shots. We needed to put more resistance on them."

Scarberry led Notre Dame with 28 points and connected on seven, three pointers. Redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds while senior Kyauta Taylor added 16 points and six assists. Megins hit four, threes and scored 12 points. The Falcons shot the ball well, finishing at 55-percent from the floor and 56-percent from three point land. In the second half, NDC shot the ball at a 58-percent clip. The Falcons were able to get 22 points in the paint, several of which came from driving to the bucket.

"We were looking to drive after we got the ball reversed," Koenig said. "We did a nice job on offense tonight."

For the Rams, all five of their starters scored in double-digits. Thomas Lang had 27 points, 10 assists and shot 9-for-11 in the game. Steffen Davis recorded 22 points and five assists while Winston Burgess scored 11 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. Shepherd recorded eight more rebounds than NDC and SU shot 59-percent from the field and 53-percent from long range.

Notre Dame will travel to Fairmont, W.Va. and play Fairmont State University on February 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
