Women's basketball tips off season at Carol Eckman Tournament

This week: Notre Dame College heads to the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament in West Chester, Pa. this weekend. The Falcons will play Millersville on Saturday, November 10, at 2 p.m. before playing West Chester on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Records: The Falcons went 23-9 during the 2017-18 season with a 9-5 road record and 2-2 record in neutral games. Millersville was 18-12 last year and lost its lone neutral site game. West Chester won 23 games and lost six last season. The Golden Rams were 12-2 at home.

Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her second season as the head coach of the NDC women's basketball program. She holds a record of 23-9. Mary Fleig has amassed a record of 503-282 in her previous 28 seasons at Millersville. Kiera Wooden is in her fourth season at the helm of the West Chester team and is 54-31.

Rankings: None of these teams were ranked in the November 1 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.

Series History: This will be the first time Notre Dame has played either of these teams since joining the NCAA Division II ranks prior to the 2012-13 season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame went 4-3 against non-conference opponents a year ago, but started their season off strong with an overtime win against Mercyhurst and a close game against No. 10 Cal.Pa. The Falcons opened their last four seasons against Mercyhurst and Cal. Pa., making the 2018-19 openers a unique contest compared to years past. NDC loses double-double machine Kim Cook from a year ago who averaged 14.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, but return its other top seven scorers. And not only do last season's stars return to the floor on Saturday, but Jessie Stout makes her long-awaited return after sitting out last season with an injury. Stout will like play a key role after she averaged 8.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in the 2016-17 season.

Noting the Marauders: Millersville was 3-1 against teams outside of the PSAC last season, and, like Notre Dame, the Marauders made it to their conference championship game. MU loses three of its top six scorers from its 18-12 team last year including Alayah Hall who averaged 17 points to lead the team. Guard Lauren Lister and forward Kendra Bamberger will have to step up in Hall's absence as the only other two players to average scoring in the double digits. Bamberger, a fifth-year senior, averaged 8.0 rebounds in 2017-18. The Marauders boast three underclassmen at 6-foot, which could pose a size disadvantage to the Falcons who max out at 5-11.

Noting the Golden Rams: West Chester will have some recovering to do after losing its four top scorers from a year ago. The Rams will not bring back a single player who averaged more than 8.7 points per game. Junior Katherine Fisher may be called upon to do a lot of the Golden Rams scoring as she is the only returning player to average more than six points per game. West Chester has six freshmen on its roster that includes four guards, a forward and a 6-foot-2 center. WCU may need to rely on inside scoring as only 44 of its 205 threes from last year were made by players on this season's roster. Fisher scored 96 of her 102 field goals inside the arc.
