Over the weekend, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams performed well, hosting their first home event of the year on Friday before heading to Wooster on Saturday. The men went 3-1 over the two days while the women went 4-2.
On Friday, the men started off strong in their head-to-head matchup against Olivet by winning the 200 medley relay by nearly three seconds. The team of
Jayton Jensen,
Delshawn Durkins,
Campbell Fisher and
Jonathan McIntosh made up the freshman quartet that won the event.
Seth Knights and
Garrett Warren each won their first individual events in the 50 freestyle and 200 IM, respectively. Warren also won the 100 backstroke.Â
The men capped off the contest the same way they started it, by winning a relay event. This time it was the 400 freestyle with Warren, Knights, Jensen and
Daniel Alvarez.Â
The women competed against Ursuline, Hillsdale and Olivet, beating Ursuline and Olivet, on Friday. Despite now placing first in any of the races, the Falcons were still able to beat Olivet 102-72 and Ursuline 116-55. Freshman,
Hannah Parkman placed second in the 1,000 freestyle while fellow newcomer
Kailyn Fleeman finished second in the 500 freestyle.
At the event hosted by Wooster, both teams lost to the home school, but beat Hiram and Thomas More. Of the 32 events on Saturday, Wooster finished first in 30. The other two were won by a pair of Falcon freshmen. Warren won the 100 backstroke while Jensen won the 200 IM. Fleeman finsihed second in the women's 200 backstroke while
Brionna Costanzo placed second in the 50 freestyle.Â
"I am really happy of the way the team stepped up and competed both days," head coach
Stephanie Gyurke said. "Saturday was a longer meet with more events and more teams, and it is often hard to perform so well on a second day of competing so early in the season. I am extremely proud of the support they offer one another throughout the meets. It is rare to look over in our team area and see anyone sitting down while someone is swimming. Coach
Jeff Saltzgaber and myself have been working hard to build that team atmosphere and to see it start coming together makes all those late night recruiting calls worth it. I can't wait to see how they perform at our mid-season invite."
Notre Dame will compete at the Ohio Wesleyan Invite on November 17-18.
