This Week: Notre Dame College travels to Wheeling Jesuit today, November 28, for a 5:30 p.m. game. Then, on Sunday, December 2, the Falcons host West Liberty at 2 p.m.
Â
Records: The Falcons are currently 3-2, 1-1 MEC after defeating UVa-Wise 64-53 last week. Wheeling Jesuit is 3-3, 1-1 MEC after winning Pitt-Johnstown on November 26. West Liberty is 4-3, 1-1 MEC after going 1-1 against two non-conference teams last week.
Â
Coaches Corner:Â Lauren Macer is in her second season as the head coach of the NDC women's basketball program. She holds a record of 26-11, 18-6 MEC. Mike Llanas is in his debut season with the Cardinals and has led his team to a 3-3, 1-1 MEC record this season. Kyle Cooper is in his second season at the helm of the West Liberty women's basketball team. Cooper is 17-19, 13-11 MEC.
Â
Rankings: None of these teams were ranked in the November 26 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
Â
Series History: The Falcons have a close record with both West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit. Notre Dame leads each series 6-5. Last year, in
Lauren Macer's first year as NDC's head coach, the Falcons won against WJU and WLU at home and lost to both teams on the road.
Â
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has had some great performances so far this season, and as a result the Falcons rank highly in the Mountain East Conference.
Seina Adachi, who has scored 20+ points in four of five games this season is currently third in the MEC in scoring. Much of that success is a result of good shooting from the free-throw line and from three-point range. Adachi ranks third in tree throw percentage (87.0) and seventh in three-point percentage (40.0). Adachi has also played well on the defensive end and her 18 steals leads the league. Adachi is just one of the many Falcons who have dominated on the defensive end this season.
Katie Karalic ranks third in the MEC with 15 steals and eighth in the conference with six blocks while
Jessie Stout is fifth in blocks with eight. To add to these individual defensive marks, NDC ranks third in the Mountain East in both offensive and defensive rebounds. Overall, Notre Dame is the third-best defensive team in the MEC (67.8 points per game allowed).
Â
Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit has both won and lost three games this season, and whether the Cardinals win or lose, their games have mostly been runaways. WJU's eight-point win against West Virginia Wesleyan has been its closest game this season. In their three losses, the Cardinals have lost by 32, 31 and 35, which has resulted in their MEC-worst -15.8 points-per-game scoring margin. But in their wins too, Wheeling Jesuit has won by larger margins that include 11-, 8- and 15-point wins.
Â
Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty has been a part of some of the highest scoring games in the MEC this season as they rank second in scoring offense (87.6 ppg) and second to last in scoring defense (88.0). The Hilltoppers make a high percentage of their shots (49.3 percent), ranking second in the MEC, but their defense also ranks worst in the league in opponents' field-goal percentage. WLU's foes have made 47.5 percent of their shots this season despite the fact that the Hilltoppers average six blocks a game, the most in the Mountain East.
