This week:Â Notre Dame College will hit the road, again, to play Wheeling Jesuit University on November 28, at 7:30 p.m. They will come home to play No. 10 West Liberty University, at 4 p.m., on December 2.
Schedule change: Notre Dame moved their game with West Liberty from Saturday to Sunday, due to schedule conflicts on campus.
Records: The Falcons are currently 5-1 and 2-0 in the Mountain East Conference while Wheeling Jesuit is 0-5 (0-2 MEC). WLU is currently 4-1, overall, and 2-0 in the MEC.
Coaches Corner:Â
Tim Koenig is the head coach of the Falcons and enters his sixth season with an overall record of 75-80 and 47-65 in the MEC. Ben Howlett is in his second season as head coach at West Liberty, with a record of 30-5 and 22-2 MEC. John Peckinpaugh is in his first season as head coach at Wheeling Jesuit.
Rankings: West Liberty is ranked tenth in the NABC Coaches poll.
Series History: NDC is 2-9 against WJU since the series started in 2013-14 and they hold a record of 1-10 versus West Liberty since 2013-14.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame put together a 2-0 record last week. In both games, NDC led at halftime, scored over 50 points in the second half and finished with 97 points. The Falcons had five players score in double-digits against the University of Virginia's College at Wise on November 19, in a 97-86 win.
Larenz Thurman scored 27 points and dished out eight assists, while also making 10 free throws.
Halil Parks and
Drew Scarberry, each, hit four three pointers.
Will Vorhees only played against UVa-Wise last week and in the game he scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and hit 10 free throws in 34 minutes. In a 97-74 victory over Carlow University,
Isaiah Sanders led both teams with 26 points and he shot 69-percent from the field. Scarberry made three, three pointers off the bench.
Thurman scores 18 points-per-game and adds 4.7 assists. In five games this season, Vorhees is averaging 24 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, three assists and is shooting 49-percent. His 24.2 points-per-game ranks third in the MEC and 12th in NCAA Division II. Vorhees is tied for first in the nation with five double-doubles and sixth in NCAA-II in rebounds-per-game. Sanders averages 16 points each game, hauls in 5.3 rebounds and grabs 1.5 steals-per-contest. He is sixth in the MEC with an average field goal percentage of .615. The Falcons are holding opponents to 39-percent shooting and NDC is blocking 4.3 shots-per-game. Notre Dame is second in the MEC by allowing just 74.7 points-per-game.
Noting the Cardinals: After winning their first MEC Tournament Title last season, Wheeling Jesuit has gotten off to a tough start. The program is in the midst of its first five game losing streak since the 2013-14 campaign. Although the Cardinals' last two losses have been by four and six points, respectively, they are losing by an average of nearly 13 points. The Cardinals fell to Glenville State College, 117-113, on November 19, despite WJU scoring 70 second half points. Jay Gentry dropped 36 points, shot 60-percent from the floor and connected on five three pointers. Brendan Hoban and Franck Kamgain scored 25 and 24 points, respectively. Wheeling Jesuit lost 85-79 to Virginia State on November 24, but held Virginia State to 29-percent shooting in the second half. Kamgain led the team with 20 points and two steals.
Kamgain is averaging 17.8 points-per-game and shooting 49-percent. He ranks seventh in the MEC with 1.8 steals-per-game. Brendan Hoban is second on the team with 15.6 points-per-contest and he is sixth in the conference with a 2.8 assist-turnover ratio. Tariq Woody ranks fifth in the MEC with a field goal percentage of .617 and he is 10th with seven rebounds-per-game. The Cardinals have been able to take the ball away, averaging 5.6 steals each game, while they only have the ball stolen from them five times per game.
Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty was ranked No. 2 in the preseason NABC Coaches poll, but lost to Kutztown University in their opening game. The Hilltoppers only played one game last week, and beat West Virginia Wesleyan College, 80-71, on November 19. WLU trailed by five at halftime, but outscored the Bobcats by 14 points in the second half. West Liberty shot 54-percent from the floor. Eric Meininger put together a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, becoming the first player in NCAA-II to do that this season. Dalton Bolon had 23 points and knocked down five threes, against the Bobcats.
Bolon averages 22 points-per-game, which ranks seventh in the MEC, and shoots 49-percent. Meininger is averaging 15.8 points-per-game, while shooting 66-percent from the field, 70-percent from three point range and 93-percent from the free throw line. He is in the top three in the conference in field goal percentage (.659) and free throw percentage (.933) and is 17th in the nation in field goal percentage. West Liberty has seven players who are shooting over 45-percent from the three point range. The Hilltoppers are the highest scoring team in the conference, and Division II, at 111.2 points-per-game but they are second worst in the MEC, allowing 93 points-per-game.
