GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Notre Dame College stayed within striking distance of Glenville State College throughout the game but a late run came up short as the Falcons fell 82-79, on Thursday evening.
Head coach
Tim Koenig said the team worked on the fundamentals over the holiday break, preparing to go up against Mountain East Conference teams the rest of the way.
"Dribbling, passing, shooting and we worked on free throws a lot," he said. "We emphasized rebounding, boxing out and not turning the ball over."
NDC (3-10, 1-6 MEC) fell behind, 9-4, after Glenville State (2-10, 1-6) knocked down three consecutive three pointers to start the contest.
But the Falcons came back, tied the game three times and at the 8:25-mark, took their first lead when senior
Kyauta Taylor hit a three to give Notre Dame a 17-15 advantage.
Just over three minutes later, at the 5:12-mark, the Pioneers grabbed the lead back when Marcus Schofield had a fast break layup, putting GSC up 25-23.
Throughout the rest of the half, Notre Dame could not re-take the lead, but did not allow the deficit to exceed six points. At halftime, the Pioneers led by four points, 37-33.
Freshman
Cole Hayes led the way for the Falcons as he scored seven points and shot 50-percent from the field. Glenville State shot 42-percent in the first half and Dwayne Chastain Jr. had eight points while two of his teammates each recorded seven points.
The Falcons worked on a comeback with senior
Oliver Megins knocking down a three and a free throw and redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry also hitting a three pointer. NDC went on a 7-3 run and with 17:14 left to go in the game, the Falcons trailed by one point, 44-43.
Glenville State responded and scored the next 13 points, which included six points from Darhius Nunn. They went ahead 57-43 at the 13:47-mark.
With 3:05 remaining, Notre Dame went on a 12-0 offensive explosion, hitting three shots from three point range in the process. The run made the game a one point difference, 78-77. The Falcons would cut the Glenville State lead to one point, one more time with 25-seconds remaining, but lost by three points after two late Glenville State free throws.
The Falcons could not take the lead from GSC late in the contest and Koenig talked about it after the game.
"We missed some layups and open jumpers," Koenig mentioned. "We need to grab defensive rebounds because it's tough to cut into leads if the other team is getting second chance opportunities."
Scarberry led the Falcons as he scored all 20 of his points in the second half. He ended the game shooting 46-percent (6-for-13). Taylor scored 15 points and dished out six assists in 38 minutes. Megins recorded 12 points and shot 3-of-5 from beyond the three point line. The Falcons shot 45-percent from three in the second half and had a season-low in turnovers with nine in the game.
Jon Dunmyer scored 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting and had six rebounds and five assists for GSC. Nunn added 15 points and Elisha Mayberry had 13 points. The Pioneers recorded 43 rebounds and had 50 bench points. For the game, they shot 46-percent from the field.
"We did take care of the basketball tonight and were better defensively." Koenig said. "But we have to execute down the stretch and we have to rebound the basketball."
NDC will travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. and will take on West Virginia Wesleyan College on January 6. The game is expected to begin at 4 p.m.
