Clutch free throws give NDC the win

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – A foul call with three second remaining allowed redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry to knock down three free throws, pushing Notre Dame College in front of West Virginia Wesleyan College, 79-78, on Saturday afternoon.

Notre Dame (4-10, 2-6 MEC) took the lead four separate times in the first 10 minutes of the back-and-forth contest.

However, at the 9:22-mark, West Virginia Wesleyan (1-13, 1-7 MEC) took a 20-18 lead on a jumper by Kam Cooper, and the Bobcats would hold that lead for a while.

However, Notre Dame did not allow the deficit to exceed six points for the rest of the half. The Falcons went on a 4-0 run before halftime, with Scarberry and senior Kyauta Taylor each hitting a shot.

At halftime, NDC trailed WVWC by a score of 31-30. Taylor went 4-for-6 from the field and had nine points. Redshirt-junior Angelo Cugini added five points and seven rebounds for the Falcons. Dusan Vicentic led the Bobcats with 12 points at halftime.

In the second half, head coach Tim Koenig said the team wanted to pressure West Virginia Wesleyan to get them out of their rhythm.

"We wanted to pressure them and get them out of their half court stuff," he said. "We wanted to do our work (on defense) before they got the ball to their big guys."

The Bobcats held the lead for much of the second half, but again, could not expand the lead over six points on the NDC defense.

Notre Dame tied the game (49-49) at the 11:13-mark with a three pointer by Taylor.

The Falcons tied the game five separate times within the final five minutes of the game. With 29-seconds remaining, Scarberry tied the game at 76 with a three pointer.

Notre Dame trailed by two points when Scarberry went up for another three point shot with three seconds remaining. The Bobcats' Luka Petrovic went too far under Scarberry, while defending him, and was called for a foul. The Falcons' forward knocked down all three free throws, winning the game 79-78.

"A great team win," Koenig said. "We have had a lot of adversity but our guys have competed and stayed together."

For the Falcons, Taylor had 14 points in the second half and finished the game with 23 points. Scarberry had 12 points in the second half and knocked down three, three pointers. He finished with 18 points. Senior Oliver Megins added 14 points and six rebounds while Cugini recorded 12 points, on 80-percent shooting, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Notre Dame had 17 second chance points.

Vicentic had 15 points and shot 71-percent in the second half for West Virginia Wesleyan. He finished with 27 points and five rebounds. Aaron Ariri added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Fred Brondsted added 11 points. WVWC shot 62-percent, as a team, and 50-percent from three point range. They also shot 73-percent from the field in the second half.

Koenig talked about coming home for their next contest, after playing road games since December 9.

"It was tough consistently traveling and it's difficult to win on the road," said Koenig. "We're looking forward to coming back home and playing at The Murph."

The Falcons will come home to play Shepherd University on January 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
