SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Tuesday night, No. 2 Notre Dame College got out to a fast start and cruised to a 43-0 home victory over their in-state rivals, No. 23 Lake Erie College.
"We've had a real good rivalry because we started wrestling maybe a year or two before they started," said head coach
Frank Romano. "As soon as they started wrestling, and because we're so close, they've wrestled us every year, either we go there or they come here."
The Falcons started with a win at 184 lbs. as sophomore
Tony Vezzetti took down Tyler Hughes with a 9-3 decision. Prior to tonight's dual, Vezzetti had sat out the previous two dual meets and four of the five matches in the National Duals, due to injury.
NDC grabbed the first nine points with three victories via decision before a forfeit by Lake Erie at 125 lbs. gave the Falcons six additional points.
Between the 141 lbs. match and the 165 lbs. match, Notre Dame scored 22 points. Redshirt-junior
Drew Walker gained four points by winning with a 17-6 major decision. Sophomore
Taylor Misuna gained six points when John Siemasz left the mat with an injury and then sophomore
Fernando Silva and senior
Anthony Dailey each earned six points with back-to-back pins.
"I knew going into the match that Lake Erie had a nice club and they're always tough," Romano said. "We wrestled well on our feet, which I'm always concerned about, because that's where we always try to shine, on our feet… I feel good about how we're wrestling."
The Falcons will compete in their final home meet of the season against Davenport University on February 3. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
