This week: Notre Dame College will host West Virginia State on Wednesday, January 24, before traveling to Charleston on Saturday, January 27. Wednesday's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. while Saturday's game will tip at 2 p.m.
Records: The Falcons are 12-7, 8-4 MEC after losing two games last week. West Virginia State is 7-11, 7-5 MEC and is on a three-game winning streak. Charleston also lost both of its games last week and is now 8-9, 5-7 MEC.
Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her first season as the head coach of the Notre Dame women's basketball program. She currently has a record of 12-7. Charles Marshall is in his second season at West Virginia State and fifth in the MEC. Marshall was previously the head coach at Glenville State for three seasons. Overall, he has a record of 83-55 as a head coach with a 24-23 record at WVSU. Adam Collins is in his sixth season with Charleston. Collins has been a head coach for over 10 years and has a record of 199-136 with a 92-74 record at UC.
Rankings: None of the teams playing this week were ranked in the January 16 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.
Series History: NDC is 5-4 against WVSU after a 84-77 road win in December and 6-4 against Charleston after defeating the Golden Eagles 77-57 earlier this season.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame is coming off its first back-to-back loss since January 3 and 5 last year. The Falcons have a good opportunity to get back to winning this week as they return home, where they have won 11-straight games dating back to last season. After a 29-point performance at Urbana last week, sophomore
Seina Adachi is a top 10 scorer in the MEC. With 16.4 points per game, Adachi ranks 10th in the league.
Kim Cook joins Adachi in the top 20 as she has averaged 13.5 points this season. Cook has also done well rebounding, ranking seventh with 8.6 per game. The Falcons split games with both WVSU and Charleston each of the past two years. NDC will look to go 2-0 against both teams for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Noting the Yellow Jackets: West Virginia State is currently on a three-game winning streak, the longest MEC win streak for the Yellow Jackets since the Mountain East's first season (2013-14). During the 13-14 campaign, WVSU had win streaks of four and five games and Notre Dame was a part of each of those stretches. Senior guard Aurreshae Hines does it all for the Yellow Jackets as she leads the team in scoring, assists and steals while ranking third in rebounding. West Virginia State struggles overall rebounding the ball as they rank last in the MEC with a -6.9 rebounding margin. Denisha Bowman, who averaged 6.3 rebounds per game, leads the team in the category.
Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston's defense is the best in the MEC as they only allow 62.3 points per game. No other team in the Mountain East has an average under 70. The Golden Eagles are also first in field goal percentage defense (.379) as one of two teams that hold their opponents to under 40 percent shooting. UC is 1-7 when opponents have made over 40 percent of their shots this season. In Notre Dame's game against the Golden Eagles on December 29, the Falcons shot 56.4 percent, the best any team has done against Charleston.
