SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College baseball team went 1-1 on Sunday against Shepherd to leave Shepherdstown with a 2-2 split against the Rams.
In the first game, NDC won 7-3 with six runs scored in the third and fourth inning to create a lead that Shepherd couldn't recover. In both the third inning, scoring was started by
Danny Beaver who scored a run off an error in the third inning and batted in a runner to score in the fourth.
Nick Ely followed Beaver's lead as he too scored in the third and hit an RBI in the fourth.
Beaver and
Ricky Phillips led the Falcons with two runs scored while
Adam Purdy led the team with two RBIs.
On the mound,
Jeff Stover won yet another game to improve his record to 4-0 on the year. Stover pitched six innings, striking out two batters.
In game two, it was the Falcons who tried to comeback and they nearly succeeded losing 8-7. The Rams started off the game hot, scoring five runs in the first inning. NDC brought the game to 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning, but gave up another three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-4 after six. The Falcons three runs off a triple hit by Ely to clear the loaded bases, but fell short after that.
Ely hit four of the six RBIs in the game while Beaver and
Jacob Carpenter hit the others.
The Falcons' pitching closed out the game well as
Todd Marshall and
Danny Matic threw the final two innings without allowing a single hit. Matic struck out all three of the batters he faced.
Notre Dame will play Urbana at home on Friday, May 5 before playing at Urbana on Sunday, May 7 to end the season. The games on Friday will be played in Avon, Ohio and are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
