Notre Dame sweeps Urbana

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College's offense came to life and Urbana University committed seven errors over two games which allowed NDC to sweep the double-header, 9-3 in game one, and 4-2 in game two, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons (21-26 overall, 11-17 MEC) got their first road sweep of the season, in their final road double-header of the year. The wins also snapped a five game losing streak. The Blue Knights (15-23, 11-17 MEC) are now on a six game losing streak and have gone 2-8 over last 10 games.

Game 1

Notre Dame got the scoring started early and put seven runs on the board before Urbana could score a run. In the top of the second inning, Erin Calhoun singled to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Stephens. Amy Hoover then reached on an error, one of five errors committed by the Blue Knights in the game. Samantha Saalfrank reached on a fielder's choice and Calhoun scored on the play following a throwing error by the shortstop, Caitlyn Stoner. Halli Swiger then hit an RBI single, putting NDC up, 2-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, with runners on second and third, Emily Kusmits singled to left field to score Amy Hoover. Sarah Depp laid down a bunt and reached first which allowed Swiger to touch home. Maria Vanadia then knocked in three runs with her fifth home run of the season, capping the five run inning.

Urbana got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Blue Knights had three singles from Briana Bamber, Riley Curtis and Margo Jackson. With two outs and bases loaded, Stoner was walked to force a run in and Bailee Faulkner singled to center for two RBI.

Up 7-3, NDC scored a run in the top of sixth inning, Calhoun hit a sacrifice fly to left field. And the Falcons added another run in the ninth inning, when Kusmits hit an RBI double to left field.

Taylor Olson (13-12) was the starting pitcher for Notre Dame and picked up the win. She allowed three runs throughout her complete game. Kusmits went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles. Swiger also had three hits. Depp and Vanadia, both had two hits and Vanadia had three RBI.

Jackson and Bailee Faulkner had three hits for Urbana and their starting pitcher Carly Allen (10-14) was saddled with the loss after allowing nine runs, eight earned along with 12 hits.

Game 2

To start the game, Emily Kusmits singled up the middle, moved to second on a groundball and then scored on a Shelby Stephens double to right field.

With a runner on, in the top of the fourth inning, Nicole Luciano hit an RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bailee Faulkner led off with a double and Jenna VanHoose walked. Still with nobody out, Mykee Holtz singled to left field. An RBI groundout and a single by Courtney Kennedy tied the game at two.

NDC jumped back on top in the sixth. With one out, Calhoun doubled and Luciano singled. Amy Hoover hit a sacrifice fly to give the Falcons the lead and then Halli Swiger singled through the left side, putting a run of insurance on the board for NDC.

Luciano had two hits in the game for NDC and starting pitcher, Taylor Olson went three innings as she allowed the only two runs. Emily Kusmits (7-8) got the win as she did not allow a run over four innings of action.

For Urbana, Bamber had two hits. Courtney Stewart (5-9) was the losing pitcher after allowing four runs, three earned over 5.2 innings.

Notre Dame will come back home, on Friday, April 28, to face Wheeling Jesuit University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
