Notre Dame drops two games to Wheeling Jesuit

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College could not get past Wheeling Jesuit University as they lost, 2-1 in game one and 4-2 in game, two after a short rain delay in the fourth inning.

With the loss, the Falcons' (21-28 overall, 11-19 MEC) two game winning streak came to an end and they are now 3-7 in their last 10 games. The Cardinals (21-23, 15-15 MEC) are on a five game winning streak with the sweep today.

Game 1

Mallory Chapman got the Cardinals on the board in the top of the third inning, with a solo home run to right field. And then in the fourth inning, with runners on second and third base, Molly Welsh singled to the shortstop to score a run, which put Wheeling Jesuit up, 2-0.

In the fifth inning, Amy Hoover singled to lead off the inning and with one out, Perris Stevens was hit by a pitch. Halli Swiger then singled to center field, scoring one run. The Falcons stranded runners on first and second base.

Taylor Olson (13-13) pitched the entire game and was given the loss for Notre Dame and she allowed only two runs over the seven innings.

Chapman (14-15) went seven innings for Wheeling, allowing one run and striking out six hitters, while earning the win. Jackie Cramer and Morgan Stohlman both had two hits.

Game 2

Neither team scored a run until the fourth inning when Rachel Conrad knocked a pinch-hit, two-run RBI single to center field. She was out on the play as she was caught between first and second base.

NDC quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning. After a rain delay that lasted about 10 minutes, Shelby Stephens walked and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Erin Calhoun, reached second base on an error, which allowed Stephens to score. Amy Hoover singled, moving Calhoun to third before a wild pitch allowed a run to score.

The tie game was short lived as the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Mallory Chapman hit a two-run home run, her second homer of the doubleheader.

For the Falcons, Stephens and Hoover, each, had two hits. Emily Kusmits (7-9) went seven innings in the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits.

Chapman (15-15) went seven innings in game two, getting the win, allowing two, unearned, runs. She also struck out five hitters. Dana Achille had two hits in the game.

The Falcons will finish the regular season, tomorrow, April 29, at home, against West Liberty University. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
