AVON, Ohio - The Notre Dame College baseball team won both of its games on Senior Day against Wheeling Jesuit at Sprenger Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Falcons improved their record to 13-27 after the 3-2 and 9-2 victories.
In game one, the Cardinals were the first on the board, scoring in the second inning to go up 1-0. The Falcons didn't take long to respond as they put up three runs in the fourth inning to go up 3-1. WJU scored again in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback.
Josh Armbruster earned his first win of the season, lasting all seven innings and striking out five batters. It was Armbruster's fourth complete game of the season and head coach
Len Barker was happy to see the junior put one in the win column.
"He's been battling all year, but hasn't gotten as many runs to help him as we'd like to see," Barker said. "Even today, we should've helped him more offensively, but he got it done. He pitched great all the way through."
The offensive play came out in game two as the Falcons put up nine runs, eight of which came in the first four innings. Five different players drove in at least one run during the game including three from
Jacob Carpenter. In both games, leadoff hitter
Adam Purdy drove in two runs.
Barker was happy with what he saw from his team in game two and knows they'll have to repeat the success seen on Saturday the rest of the season.
"It's big for us because we're still in the playoff hunt and we have to win every game we can," Barker said. "We need to beat teams like this. [Wheeling Jesuit] has lost something like 15 games by one run so they're a good team, they just haven't been winning."
Notre Dame will play a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit tomorrow, April 23 beginning at 1 p.m.
