Falcons have trouble hitting UVa-Wise in two losses

WISE, Va. – Notre Dame College was off to a promising start, on Friday afternoon, before allowing two late runs to the University of Virginia-Wise and falling in nine innings, in game one, 4-2 and then were no-hit in a game two loss, 9-0.

The Falcons (19-26 overall, 9-17 MEC) have now lost five consecutive games and are 2-8 in their last 10 conference games. With the win, the Cavaliers (27-15, 18-8 MEC) have now won six straight games, and have gone 9-1 over their last 10 games.

Game 1

NDC started the game with an early lead as Emily Kusmits homered to center field. The Falcons added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Samantha Saalfrank hit her first home run to right field, putting Notre Dame up, 2-0.

Virginia-Wise tied the game up quickly in the bottom of the seventh inning. In their last at-bat, Olivia Cleary and Shannon Bennett hit back-to-back homers. They used more power to win the game, as Nikki Smith hit a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Taylor Olson was the starting pitcher for Notre Dame and went six innings, allowing only two runs on nine hits. Emily Kusmits (6-7) was handed the loss after pitching 2.2 innings and gave up the game-winning home run.

Taylor Brandts (16-5) was the winning pitcher for Wise, after she allowed two runs over nine innings and struck out eight hitters. Alexa Hernandez, Samantha Ely and Smith all had two hits. Cleary had three hits in the contests.

Game 2

UVa-Wise jumped on the board early after scoring two runs on a double by Shannon Bennett and an RBI single by Alexis Sheehan in the first inning, giving the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. All of the runs came after two outs and were unearned because of an error early in the inning that should have been the second out.

In the bottom of the third inning, a bases-loaded double by Lucindy Lawson plated two more runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the game was delayed due to a storm that reached the field.

After the lengthy delay, the Cavaliers scored four times in the fifth inning on an RBI single, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run.

Notre Dame's Emily Kusmits (6-8) started the game in the pitcher's circle and allowed five runs, two earned, over 2.2 innings and picked up the loss. Rachelle Miller and Taylor Olson also pitched in the game.

Raychel Lapallo (5-6) pitched a no-hitter for the Cavaliers and earned the win. The only base runner for the Falcons was Erin Calhoun, who reached in the bottom of the second inning on an error.

The Falcons will play Urbana University, on the road, on Wednesday, April 26. The first pitch of the double-header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
