NDC’s Offense Struggles Early But Comes to Life in the Afternoon

NDC scores three runs in loss to the NYIT, puts 10 on the board against Felician

After winning all three games on Sunday, the Notre Dame Falcons fell to the New York Institute of Technology Bears, 1-0, on Monday morning but beat the Felician University Golden Falcons, 10-6 on Monday afternoon.

Game 1

With the loss, the Falcons (3-3) end their three game winning streak and NYIT (4-3) is now on a two game winning streak.

NDC's best chance to score came in the top of the second inning. Shelby Stephens walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Calhoun. Stephens then moved to third on a groundout by Sarah Depp but the inning ended when Brittany Kirwin grounded out to third base.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Christine Olivas doubled to center field and moved to third base on a ground out. Tiffany McCracken singled to right field, scoring the eventual, winning run for New York Institute of Technology.

In the pitching circle for the Falcons, Rachelle Miller (0-2) was given the tough loss after allowing only one run on five hits. She also struck out four batters. Laura McLaughlin (3-1) started the game for the Bears and got the win as she pitched a complete game shutout.

Game 2

The Falcons improved to 4-3 with the win while Felician falls to 5-5 on the season.

NDC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Emily Kusmits singled in Nicole Luciano. Kusmits then came all the way around to score as Maria Vanadia reached on an error by the first baseman, Mia Montoya.

Leading 3-1 in the top of the third inning, the Falcons went to work again. With two outs, and runners on first and second, Sarah Depp hit a ball into right field that got down for a hit, which loaded the bases. Vanadia scored from third base on a passed ball by the Golden Falcons catcher, Brynne Bauman. Amy Hoover then hit a double to left, clearing the bases. Nicole Paolucci followed Hoover with an RBI single. Two batters later, Shelby Stephens reached on error by the third baseman, Racquel Manzo, scoring Paolucci and capping the five run inning.

Felician scored two runs in the third inning and then made it a two run game with a three run fourth inning. An RBI double by Jackie Duenas, a sacrifice fly by Montoya and an RBI single by Jaimie Parisi cut the Golden Falcons deficit.

Notre Dame put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning as Luciano and Stephens doubled back-to-back, each pushing a run across the plate, making it a 10-6 Falcons lead.

Eight of the nine hitters in the lineup recorded a hit for the Falcons. Luciano went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double, Erin Calhoun went 2-for-3 and Paolucci reached every single time she stepped up to the plate, going 2-for-2 and walking twice. Taylor Olson (2-1) was the starting pitcher for the Falcons and went three innings and picked up the win, allowing six runs, four of them being earned. Emily Kusmits pitched four scoreless innings of relief.

For Felician University, Duenas and Jeannette Roldan both went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bella Davis also had two hits and Steph Donah recorded four hits, including a double. Erin Powers (2-2) started the game for the Golden Falcons, going four innings, allowing eight runs, five earned, and being saddled with the loss.

The Falcons will play Northern State University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. and then take on Northwood University at 6 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
