AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Notre Dame College baseball team earned two wins on its first day in Florida in a doubleheader series against Lewis University. NDC won 4-3 and 4-2 on Sunday.
In game one against the Flyers, starting pitcher
Tyler Gault pitched a complete game to earn his first win of the season. Gault faced 28 batters, striking out three while giving up just five hits. The Falcons were on the board first with after
TJ Lett scored in the fourth inning. Lewis and Notre Dame traded runs after that as Lewis went up 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the sixth inning
Robert Williams was able to tie the game up off of an error by the Flyers' second baseman. Then in the seventh and final inning,
Danny Beaver scored off of a fielding error from a ball hit by Lett to win the game 4-3.
In the second game it was a trio of pitchers getting the job done. With an early 2-0 lead, courtesy of a
Zach Santoro triple in the first inning,
Carter Daniels,
Danny Matic and
Kenny Pierson held 32 batters to just seven hits. The Falcon defense had a strong performance as well in their first game without an error to hold the Flyers to just two runs.
After Lewis tied the game up 2-2 in the fifth inning Mattic came in to close out the fifth and come away with a win as Pierson struck out two batters on his way to earning the first Falcon save of the year.
Again it was errors that did in the Flyers as the two unearned runs were scored in the sixth inning to give the Falcons their winning 4-2 score.
The one, two and three spots for NDC did well as Beaver,
Austin Barnhart and Lett scored five of the eight runs on the day.
Notre Dame College will play again tomorrow, March 6, against Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m.
