CLERMONT, Fla. – The Notre Dame Falcons began their 2017 campaign on Saturday morning, falling to the Northern State University Wolves, 5-3.
NDC struck first as
Shelby Stephens doubled to center field, with one out. After
Emily Kusmits struck out,
Maria Vanadia then came through with a two-out, RBI single to right field, giving Notre Dame an early 1-0 advantage.
Katelynn Dilts then led off with a single for Northern State. The Falcons starting pitcher,
Taylor Olson, was able to get the next two Wolves' hitters with a strike out and a line drive to second base. However, Kennady Thompson hit a ball that found its way into left field, moving Dilts to second base. Jamie Fisher then tied the game at one with a single to left field, plating Dilts. With runners on second and third base, Jess Vernon capped the three run inning with a two-RBI single to right.
Down 3-1, Notre Dame added another run in the top of the second inning.
Sarah Depp singled to start the inning, before
Amy Hoover grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop, Lauren Kunz, erasing Depp. Hoover stole second, putting herself into scoring position.
Nicole Paolucci would then ground into a fielder's choice to the Wolves' pitcher Missy Elkins. Elkins tried to get Hoover at third base, but Hoover was safe. Hoover then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Halli Swiger.
Northern State quickly went up 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Rachel Albright walked and Thompson came up with a two-run homer to center field.
Trailing by three runs in the seventh inning,
Perris Stevens came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and homered to center field. The Falcons had a chance to tie or even win the game as they received back-to-back two-out singles from
Nicole Luciano and Stephens but the Falcons left them stranded.
For the Falcons, both Luciano and Stephens went 2-for-4 and the first four hitters in the order had at least one hit. Olson (0-1) started the game and went three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. She was saddled with the loss.
Rachelle Miller relieved Olson and pitched three innings, allowing one hit.
Thompson and Vernon went 2-for-3, with two RBI for the Wolves. Their starter Elkins (2-2) got the win, going seven innings and giving up three runs.
The Falcons will play Ursuline College today, at 11:30 a.m., in Clermont, Fla.
